No idea. But they were adamant about it. I don't know why they might be. Perhaps Culinary has a quota of "right-to-work vs. dues-paying" employees. But I'm just grasping at straws.

It's no trouble at all to find stories of companies that either closed the doors, moved overseas, or to lower cost states, all due to the unions strangle hold. Union demands in the US auto industry almost destroyed the whole business.

Hostess Brands closing for good due to bakers strike - Nov. 16, 2012

To call a labor union "nothing more than a democratic organization working together for the betterment of the members" is regurgitated pro-union garbage.

You might really want to educate yourself on the subject matter before making outlandish claims that the union drove Hostess into bankruptcy.
Old HB - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Note that it had been bought and sold several times prior to the first bankruptcy in 2004. After emerging from the first in 2009 (one of the longest reorganizations in history) the company executives took multi million dollar bonus after the workers had agreed to wage and benefit concessions. Imagine going to work Monday and being told you're taking a 15% cut in pay, and now have to pay a portion of your health benefit, and then the executives take big bonus'.

After skimming millions they hired a new CEO who stopped paying the employee pension benefits in 2011. The strike was voted for when 92% of the employees turned down the contract offer. While in Bankruptcy again in 2012 the Hostess executives asked, and received multi million dollar bonus'.

Yeah, those greedy working class people drove Hostess right into the ground, and management tried hard to keep it solvent my a$$!

Would you like to hear about what corporate America did to Meryvns stores? They bought a solely owned business, and then sold off the property to another corporation making the stores rent back their properties. In a matter a few years they liquidated as much as they could, took millions in profits, and left they employees on the curb with their 401k monies tied up in bankruptcy. And these people were non-union?

I'm so sorry for these 1%ers it almost makes me want to cry. At what point are working class Americans owed some respect? You want two class third world status? Guess what, it's coming, and it's coming fast. Food stamps have doubled, do you really think a majority of these people would rather have a job?

By they, it sounds like your talking about the other sub management level workers, or were they the hiring managers?

I'm proud to be 3rd generation Carpenters union retiree!
I don't doubt the union has provided for you. I'm not even saying unions are bad, just they have problems but probably the best you can hope for in collective bargaining.

In 33 years I spent 5 years as a full time Apprenticeship instructor where I saw, and learned of things I will not say that left me a bit disillusioned. However, it doesn't change the fact that I'm better off being union than not. It's kind of like political sheeple that think politicians do things to hurt America. I personally don't think any president honestly wants to hurt our country. I may not like some of the things they do, but don't think it's malicious intent.

I will always look back at history after WWII when unions were strong, and it built one of the greatest middle class societies of all time. Consumer spending drives our economy, so what better than to put people to work.

born & raised in IBEW household, 95% of my family/friends worked as union electricians. while i chose not to become an electrician, the job i have now gives me the option of joining or not joining the union. non-members have the exact same benefits as members however....members get to vote for what they want in the contract. non members have no say in this.

i will agree that there are some unions that are no good bums - ALL unions are not bad.

I hope i did not stir any bad blood or ill feelings with the question.

So from what i can tell , if the job is has a union , research and figure out if it's worth joining. But most jobs are non union .

Thank You

It sounds like some misinformation within the dept going by Scoops recollection. this is something Scoop could straighten out with a couple of emails to the right person in HR if he wants to pursue it.

It's probably not worth the aggravation and possible rancor in this kitchen.
