Depends on the garage door opener company. I just reprogrammed my outside wall pad, existing remote and a new remote two weeks ago. I did not know the existing code.

On the garage door opener if you hold the program button down on the motor for 6 seconds it clears all the codes and you start anew. It was a Chamberlain Lift Master 1/2 hp if that helps.

I will call the garage door company. Very good idea to make sure

Replaced it @ sears outlet & have to exchange as can not working

Ignore the guy that said "welcome to Vegas". It does suck but you have to keep things in perspective. It was an old fridge, for all you know it would've died on you in a few months anyways.

If it was made in the last 15 years, your garage door opener uses rolling code technology, and there is no "code" to set or change. What is done is each remote is programmed into the door opener, or "learned". That's why you need to make it "forget" about all the remotes programmed into it when you take possession of the house - that includes any wireless keypads. The typical procedure is to hold down the "learn" button on the door opener powerhead for 10 to 30 seconds in order to clear its memory of any learned remotes. Instructions are easily found via Google, no need to pay someone to do something so simple.

Is the outside keypad the same thing (signal wise) to the motor
As a remote? Send the same type of signal to open the door?

Yes. But it has a front end that requires a password entry to send the signal. You have to do a scratch reboot to kill the old entry code and then enter a new one.

In that process you will likely have to synch it to the central unit again. That is when you press the button on the garage door opener. Such directions should be available on the internet.

Thanks everyone. Both remote & kepad swiped clean & reprogrammed.
The keypad cover came off though. I think I'll have to take it to lowes
To see if it broke. I realign it on the hinge & keeps coming off when
I lift it off. Don't recall it doing that before but perhaps it was

Thanks for getting me "on track".
You are right, it was pretty easy once I realized that I had to access
The motor - which means get the car out (1 car garage). Ha ha
