We love our Venta. Pricey, but worth it. Simple technology that lasts forever, but best of all it humidifies the air while it cleans the air at the same time. You can get them at Bed, Bath & Beyond.

Uh... that's the whole point. It humidifies the very dry air we get in Vegas.

How much work is associated with maintaining the Venta? Can you use Las Vegas tap water?

We had a humidifier of another brand and it was really a pain to keep the inner workings clean. We eventually tossed it because of the hard water and ended up putting a couple small decorative fountains in the house. We only used distilled water in them and they kept the humidity at a reasonable level. There were no filters to clean, no treatment additives and it was easy to see the water level as well as a pleasing visual and sound aspect.

The downside was that they obviously didn't filter the air, but we were more interested in the additional humidity. Was considering using one Venta in conjunction with a couple fountains to cover the square footage. I think eventually all the air would be circulated throughout the house. Especially if you used ceiling fans. That way the Venta might filter most of the air.

The fan has 3 settings depending on how fast you want the wheels to spin. They vary from completely silent to a low hum... nothing we can't sleep through.

As far as maintenance, there are no filters to replace. The water catches all the gunk in the air. In Las Vegas, you'll probably have to dump/replace the water once a day or so since it's so dry (and dusty) here. Every month we clean the hard water scale with the Venta cleaner solution... you just run the unit with the cleaner inside it, then dump it, but I suspect running some vinegar through it would do just as good a job cleaning it with less expense.

Yes, I would think using distilled water would keep it cleaner for longer between washings, but we're too lazy and cheap to do that.

If you are one of those who believes that radon gas in houses is a health concern, you should know that air purifiers increase the risk since the radon gas decay products (the actual danger) plate on to dust particles. In other words, anything that reduces dust in the house increase the risk of radon gas (which is just a marker for its decay products).
