Chain restaurant chain snobbery is because the sysco truck drives around town dropping off the same frozen mozzarella sticks that are just marketed differently at TGIChilliRubyApplebees etc. Meanwhile the independent guy down the street breading his own mozzarella sticks and making his own dipping sauce gets no love. Thats the basis. Whether it holds true in any one locale or in anyones singular opinion is indifferent. Eat what you like.
While I appreciate and patronize mom and pop establishments I also appreciate chain restaurants. These restaurants even before they roll out a new set of menus go through a lot of trial and error before they add on the menu the food it serves on its restaurants. Often times but not always, mom and pop food are not good simply because it has not been tried and tested and perfected before it gets served to the public. They simply do not have the resources to do so.

I can only speak for the GC that I have experienced personally. The food isn't bad, but every single time (without exception), I have been there the place is FILTHY beyond description. I have been to restaurants located in Springfield, MO, Branson, MO, Cortez, CO and Farmingtons NM, so I am thinking that this is de rigueur with the brand.

It might just be poor management (which seems to be rampant these days) but personally, I'd rather spend a little more and eat someplace where you don't have to sit in other people's spilled food or have your shoes stick to the floor in front of the dessert station.

Just sayin'

A lot of people say the same thing about IHOP, but I haven't found that to be the case here. I've only been in a couple of restaurants in town where I was concerned about the hygiene of the place. One of them was a Chinese restaurant that ended up on the RJ's list of restaurants downgraded by the health department. One of the other places closed, and now has a new owner who seems to know what he/ she is doing.

I guess the sticky floors in the dessert area are probably inevitable due to all the little kids getting greedy while loading up their ice cream cones. GC is definitely a family place, not a place for a romantic dinner.

I've only been to Golden Corral out in Utah when I lived there (4 times-ish). It was on par and sometimes slightly better than Hometown Buffet (another Utah joint). It was always better than Chuck O' Rama (upchuck o' rama).

I would personally go to most (if not all) of the Station casino's buffet instead of GC, and that isn't much of a compliment to Stations.

I do not understand the love in this town for Chick-fil-A. How does the saying go, "Absence makes the heart grow fonder."? I've been in Las Vegas for 5 years and when presented with the option on vacation, I chose In-n-out and even Wendys over Chick-fil-A. Maybe 5 more years and my negative Chick-fil-A opinion will change. I find their food the epitome of fast food mediocrity.

So true... bland chicken at best. Not to mention the totally unnecessary political stance the company takes.

Golden Corral opening first location in Las Vegas - www.ktnv.com

Opens Thursday.

This thread got me thinking about GC so I went to one here in Phoenix, hadn't been to one in years. Have to say...it was really good. Clean, nice presentation, and tasty. And who doesn't love a chocolate fountain?

I drive by the construction site every day on my way to work. I could have reported this weeks ago if I thought anyone cared. I've watched it go up from the day they poured the concrete slab.

What's so special about Golden Corral?

OK, yes, I am a foodie. Usually, I prefer to head to any of a number of local independent restaurants in Chicagoland.

Do I eat at Golden Corral?

Yes.

It is the ONLY place that I am aware of in my area that serves a wide variety of vegetables, and surprisingly, they do a pretty good job. For example, I went there last week, and had a plate consisting of carrots, Brussels sprouts, turnip greens, and steamed broccoli. All were well prepared and well seasoned. Add in a fried chicken breast and a wedge of cornbread and I am set for dinner.

Total cost: $7 for the "early bird" senior citizen special plus tax plus a $1 tip for the "server".

Personally, I would prefer a Luby's or Piccadilly's Cafeteria but they don't exist in the area.

That is why I eat at Golden Corral.
