As for why UNR has a medical school and UNLV doesn't? Really? The center of gravity with Nevada State Government is in a little city to the south of Reno. So Reno receives the benefits...and I am NOT talking just higher education, but state government in general. Headquarters, department heads, etc are located near the capital. And although UNLV has very recently become the larger school, UNR has about an 80 year start building its schools and capital expenditures.
And yet we keep voting in governors from Northern Nevada. *shakes head*

That is good news about Clark. Glad to hear it.

CSN has a high school campus. It's one of the better schools in the valley. I maintain that our population warrants more gifted programs and schools than we currently provide. I cannot understand why this is such an unpopular position. But that's how it is. We're just supposed to accept the fact that a lot of seriously smart kids are stuck attending dropout mills -- because their parents don't speak the right language or come from the right side of the tracks.

I say that's an egregious waste of resources (the only kind of resource that really matters).

The top 0.1% of students may not have a dedicated school, but that doesn't mean they don't have excellent opportunities. The bottom 10% - 25% are the most under represented students(notice that I said "students", not "schools") that desperately need the support. Until this is done, CCSD will continue to have a bad reputation. Some of it deserve, but some of it not.

But honestly, this is just you sidelining the discussion about Clark and their high achieving students, so that you can subvert the dialogue into the direction you want it to go.

If you want push your agenda, start a thread on it.

C'mon. Lets face it, the high-achieving kids aren't likely to come back here after college. Who IS likely to stay here? The dropouts. That's who.

I am absolutely happy that we have an uptick of National Merit Scholars and even a Rhodes scholar. Fantastic. But I still say we need more programs for the gifted kids. After all, the Rhodes scholarship program has been around for more than a century. We finally sent a kid from CCSD to Oxford. (Seriously, fantastic.) By rights, we should have a Rhodes scholar every sixteen years or so (based on our population). We are statistically almost 30 years overdue.
