We could get a med school sooner than we thought:

University-cancer institute merger announced; could bring new med school to Las Vegas | Las Vegas Review-Journal

We really need this. There is a serious shortage of doctors in the valley and it's tough to recruit from out of state because of our bad reputation for schools, etc. Sometimes, patients end up hospitalized because there was a six week wait to get a visit with a specialist. Maybe some of these "home grown" physicians will stick around after they graduate.

That is good news. Such progress would also help improve the cultural/intellectual climate of Las Vegas.

Agreed. We are making some strides culturally, ( Smith Center, Arts District, Springs Preserve ) but it's slow going. Intellectually, they may have to break CCSD up into smaller districts to more accurately represent the quality of available education here. It's not all bad, just like the medical community, which took a beating because of Desai's hep C outbreak.

If we had a better reputation for schools and medicine, more smart people might move here, and that is never a bad thing.

If I am not mistaken Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health is going to have an expansion. See how it goes, I have not heard anything lately.
As far as UNLV, glad they are talking about the medical campus apart from the usual arena talk!

Encourage local hospitals to hire them and it's win-win -- provided the instruction is first rate. (And I hope it is.)

They (Cleveland Clinic) recently started a program for MS patients. Too late for my mom, who died of MS complications at age sixty a couple of years ago, but I know she'd be glad to hear that they are helping others with the same problem.

Originally, that clinic was supposed to be aligned with UNLV, but the politics got in the way and Larry Ruvo teamed up with CC to save the project.

The influx of med students will help UMC, and I can't imagine a halfway decent doctor going without work in this town. SMA (Southwest Medical Associates) and HCP (Healthcare Partners) are always recruiting.

I too, hope the instruction is first rate. It sounds like the private college that just teamed up with NVCI (article linked) does a pretty good job educating pharmacists and RNs. Let's hope that extends to physicians.
