The construction industry is perhaps the heaviest user of apprenticeship programs in the United States, with the US Department of Labor reporting 74,164 new apprentices accepted in 2007 at the height of the construction boom. Most of these apprentices participated in what are called "joint" apprenticeship programs, administered jointly by construction employers and construction labor unions.

How can it not be about unions when they are the backbone of apprenticeships in the US?

It is my understanding that not one single non-union apprenticeship has qualified under the Fitzgerald Act.

George Bush knew the importance of this training, and was supported by the Carpenters in 2004.

Look, I don't want a debate, I just want to pay my damn bills. I want to go to work, do my damn job, get paid a decent wage, and go home. I made 3.56 per hour today at my job. [snip-- language]

No debate, but rather knowing who to contact. Electricians, Sheetmetal, and Sprinklerfitters will all have tests prior to admission. These are some of the highest paid, so contact them and inquire about when these tests take place. Some others you should show up, and inquire about what it takes to get indentured as an apprentice. Let's say you hit one a week, and then start over again.
The construction industry is always seeking hardworking profitable people, and only the best survive. An apprentice speaks very little, and busts butt if you want to advance. If you think you have what it takes get started ASAP!

You could walk into any McDonalds and double that. No debate needed. Walk into a McDonalds and double your earnings.

No, it would be the same because I work 12 hours 6 days a week.

On good weeks, I bring in 700~ a week. Mcdonalds won't do that. My bills are 2200~ mcdonalds will not cover that.

Are you supporting a family?

I only ask because all the construction trades have a long list of people waiting to be called back to work and getting an apprenticeship may prove quite difficult. If you look outside of an apprenticeship, you can open up your options.

By my math it would be about a wash.
Because if you worked that much at Mc'ds you would get quite a bit of "overtime" pay.

Glad to hear your bills are 2200 as my disability check is 2400.
At least I will make ends meet

So how was the physical exam for being a Cabbie?

I don't think anyone can get that many hours at McDonalds. So, let's go back to other suggestions for the OP, please.

Only the McDonalds in North Dakota pays overtime. It was in the news recently.

It was obviously a tongue-in-cheek comment. My point was that just about any job in the US will pay more than what the OP is currently making per hour. At double that hourly wage, he would need to work half as much to earn the same. Even working at Wal-Mart evidently pays more than being a cab driver. So, perhaps OP should leave driving immediately, get any of the hundreds of retail jobs hiring now, and at least he will be able to make the same and have time to look for something that is more enjoyable.
