One day is more than sufficient to transfer utilities. If they are actually off it takes at least two and often three business days. The gas company has to actually get a guy on site to turn on the gas. And the water and electric have to be on to get the gas on.

Call at least a few days ahead if you have natural gas service. You'll need an appointment for someone to come out and turn it on.

We had never had utilities in NV before and it took 3 days for gas, 2 days for electric and one day for water. You have to go in person to turn on water. I could never get a human on the phone, so gas set up was by internet

And in the meantime, get a Cresent wrench, go outside and lift water main cover and turn knob 90 degrees. Go to gas meter, and turn knob 90 degrees. Call NV Energy and have them enable your meter. If anyone asks you don't know nothing.

Also, ask for a letter of credit from your current utility company. You can fax this to the new provider and (hopefully) avoid any deposits.
