Has anyone tried to get a upgrade on the rental using the $20 trick? The last time I was there they didn't have any full size cars so the person in the garage told me to pick a small SUV and all he did was write something on the contract sleeve.

It may work, but it may cost you $20 for nothing. Car rental people are judged by their up selling abilities so even if the $20 would benefit them more, they might need a booked upgrade more to keep their job or get a bonus.

Last time I was at the airport rental, I had a "virtual" agent that I talked to on a screen. There were real people there, but there were many virtual agents too. You only go to the garage after they have the car ready for you. Tipping the garage guy would be useless. If it were going to work, it would have to be at the desk.

The easiest way to get a free upgrade is to just reserve a car in a class or two below the one you want. Most of the time the lowest and middling class of cars are over-reserved because they're cheaper. Since they can't "downgrade" your class you'll always get upgraded instead. Happens to me the majority of times I've rented a car.
