Trucks hauling dangerous uranium waste from Tennessee for burial in a landfill at the Nevada National Security Site will start rolling early next year despite objections from Gov. Sandoval, who is powerless to stop them, federal officials said Tuesday.

Kevin Knobloch, chief of staff to Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz, said Nevada cannot veto the disposal plan at the government's self-regulated site, 65 miles north of Las Vegas. That leaves the state - if it chooses - with the possible threat of legal action or intervention by Nevada's congressional delegation led by Senator Harry Reid, as remedies for DOE's plan.

For a state that fought tooth & nail against the proposed high-level nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, the prospect of another type of highly radioactive waste to be buried in the state also was unsettling to environmental activists and some leaders.

If Nevada failed to put a foot down about the uranium material, or at least try, what other forms of nuclear waste might the government look to ship to the Silver State?

Over 100 shipments would be made over a period of 18 months to 3 years.

What do you think? There's still time to stop this before it's too late? And where would be a better burial site?

In my opinion, they are going to stick us with radioactive waste no matter what we do. Rather than fight it, we should have made them PAY us big bucks. We could have had the best educational and infrastructure funding ever if we'd played our political cards right. Instead we're getting hosed, just like we do with mining.

In case you are not aware, there are trucks that move "stuff" all the time across the US....There are so many Black Ops agencies in the government that this happens everyday... Not to mention the people who receive "pay" for letting this happen....

And just because you have been told it is going to be uranium in those trucks...Doesn't mean it will be... Ever seen a Milk tanker with an out of state (as in quite a few states away) driving around.. They ain't hauling milk.... BUt they might not be hauling dangerous stuff either....

Nevada National Security Site has been filling up with "things" for quite awhile now...

There are also lots of goodies left over out there from the test site days. A former boyfriend of mine worked out there
(he's a nuclear physicist) and some of the stories he told me would keep you up at night if I shared them.

Anyone here ever seen the movie "Silkwood"? Silkwood (1983) - IMDb

That kind of thing. It was described to me as a cat and mouse game.

There was an update in the newspaper today, on this issue, and there could be some hope yet of stopping these shipments! Let's hope so! Just keep it there in Tennessee!

If they are going to bring in the shipment hopefully the State can collect some type of tariff.

NV is 85% government owned desert.. I can't imagine a better place to put it. People have a "not in my backyard" mentality, but it makes the most sense to put it where people DON'T live.

Exactly. The dry desert is ideal for long term storage. It has to go somewhere.

The biggest problem with a nuclear waste repository in Nevada is everyone knows about it.

There are other nuclear threats that would kill the people of Nevada way before radioactive waste does. Civilians have no idea what comes in and out of Nellis or Groom Lake (and probably don't want to know).

Do you really think there are no nukes in Nevada?

People are extremely paranoid when it comes to the subject of nuclear energy and waste. Anything involving "nuclear" is taken very seriously by the DOE and military. They would not be storing this waste in the desert if it wasn't safe. I have received more radiation from the sun than the exposure from working on nuclear submarines for 20+ years.
