Ridgebacks are beautiful, noble dogs.

@jayway, you are killing me with the thought processes of a coyote!

If you did this to my cat I better not know what kind of car you drive you might find it in flames.

So it's OK to let your cat roam the world and use your neighbor's yard as a litter box, but not OK for them to do anything about it?

His post, that's a pretty humane option. I don't see any problem with it.

Stop thinking of yourself as some god ruling over your tiny dominion. Animals are unaware of the invisible lines humans draw. Would you shoot down birds for violating your airspace? A cat pooping in some dirt is not an actual problem; the problem is narcissism.

It's really pretty simple, but allow me to explain
A cat belongs to a person. The wild bird does not.
A cat emits really bad odors when it defecates. A wild bird does not.
Volume of cat excrement is much greater than a wild bird.
I shouldn't expect my neighbor to clean up after my cat.
Keeping you cat indoors is safer for your cat and greatly enhances it's chances for a long life.
Yes, animals are unaware of the invisible lines humans draw, but we humans are aware of those lines and to ignore those lines is very disrespectful to your neighbors

Really, no. I've had cats, I like cats. But domestic cats should not be wandering freely. The Egyptian Wildcat (which is the progenitor is not native to the Mojave Desert, and should not be interacting with (and likely killing) the wildlife out there.

Nope. We have far more problem with wild birds than with the cats. When the felines have enough room they cause no real problems. We have sidewalks and cars that get whacked with bird dodo that needs to be cleaned up at least weeekly.

Out here in equestrian country we regularly have to deal with rodent infestations. Cats help...particularly a feral or two. Since our feral crossed the rainbow bridge we need to use poison boxes every while to keep the rodents from moving in. They are out at the moment. Our feral was always glad to point out she belonged to no one. Just try and get near to find out.

I am actually thinking of trying to acquire a new feral.

If the cat is just traveling through the yard, no problem. I had a big problem with cat feces/ urine is my yard. Really foul smelling. I couldn't even open the windows without cleaning up the yard. We don't have a huge rodent problem but I don't use poisons because if a predator eats the rodent (cats included) it can kill the predator (blood thinners in the poison). Also some folks enjoy vegetable gardening and cats can make that a rather unpleasant experience ( cats love to use previously dug dirt lol). We have zero bird problems like pigeons

By the way, I'm not anti cat. We had three indoor cats that passed away over time

Actually my big Maine Coon comes in to pee or defecate and never goes off our property. He will however kill anything he can sneak up on unless one of us is close enough to intervene.

We go through about two lbs of bird seed in two or three days in our finch feeder and a suet square lasts three days. The hummer feeder makes it through a week or 10 days. Sitting here just before watching a Morning Dove trying to eat at the finch feeder. Normally the doves feed off the spillage but this guy could actually get his head in while hanging on by a single claw...Actually falls off or runs up against the window once in a while.
