We are retired and are planning to re-locate to Las Vegas mainly due to cold weather. We are planning to spend about 150-200K on the house. Is my decision to re-locate a good one for seniors.

I have been looking at properties on Zillow in areas 89139, 89129, 89081, 89131, 89031 and 89149. I prefer a single story house of about 1800 sqft. Could anybody living in Las Vegas advise on my community selection. Could you recommend some other areas as well. I find a lot of properties on Zillow and many are for auction. Is it a good idea to purchase through auction. Any advise shall be highly appreciated.

I just retired here about three months ago. So far so good. My only advice would be to get a good real estate agent. Mine was exceptional and made the whole property purchase thing a breeze.

Use the search function to ask for crime rate per zip code. Some of the zip codes you mentioned are not the best. If you have someone here who can recommend a good realtor, great. Otherwise, I have seen people come in, think they have good realtors and end up being shown properties in some of the worst zip codes.

I relocated from New England basically "sight unseen". Just go to a realtor's website, put in all of the specifics you're looking for, and they'll email you homes as they become available. If you've never been here, I would NOT recommend doing anything until you come here and drive through various zip codes. It won't take more than a couple days, and you'll pretty much know immediately where you will and will not feel comfortable living.

Look in area code 89143 also. Go to www.zipdatamaps.com and put in the zip codes that you are looking for. All the info you need will be there.

We retired here two years ago this month and it was the best decision we had ever made. Enjoy!

My realtor would not "recommend" any zip codes when I asked because it's really subjective and probably more for legal reasons. I researched on my own and visited the areas with him. I prefer the SE area of 89123 and 89183. My mom retired here and loves it, wouldn't want to spend her retirement anywhere else.

There are other things a competent realtor can tell you that you cannot get from looking at a color coded crime zipcode map. Like what areas have the best views because they are higher, less mosquitos, cooler temps, least traffic, easiest commutes, highest rate of appreciation and depreciation and most congestion.
