My house is 5.5 miles away from RC, haven't smelled it once in 3 years. If the wind blows hard in the right direction you can occasionally smell it in the parking lot at Home Depot on North 5th.

I rarely get any pig farm smell at my place. Even then, it's only a whiff when the wind blows from the east which doesn't happen often. I don't think they get it in Aliante at all because they are up the hill a bit.

Just remember the Apex landfill, RC Pig farm and the Republic Services garbage recycling are in their respective locations long before majority of the homes were built in the area. These establishments will be around for a very long time as much as the homeowners dislike it. There are consequences for having these type of establishments in the area even if local homeowners deny or pretend there is no nuisance. There is foul odor in the area, not only in Aliante Casino but around the 215 beltway near the casino. As people would say you take the good with the bad. Prospective homeowners don't say you were not warned!

Maybe you got the wrong odor. Actually Aliante is closer to Spring Valley than Apex...so maybe it is the gentle odor of Spring Valley you detected.

We liked Aliante, and it was extremely close to the VA. It was very clean, and well maintained. No complaints from us. I drove into many neighborhoods (gated and non) and some we liked more than others. If we come down (we'll know in a few weeks, but it's looking like it) we'd probably rent in Aliante before figuring out where we'd like to buy. I didn't smell anything funky while we were there and it was rather windy for the two days.

We did some general exploring. We also found homes online that matched our profile, inside particular areas, and then drove to them, to see how the communities looked. For instance we picked 4-6 homes inside Aliante, CH, Providence and Summerlin and drove to them all. We were a little confused about the CH and Providence areas though. It seemed like homes we thought were in CH, were actually up in Providence, but then again we weren't totally sure on the boundaries.

Virtually no traffic up on 215 either. Just nothing really.

We REALLY liked Summerlin, and the views of Redrocks were just ....woah. There is a high chance she could also be working at home within the year, so we'll see I guess. So, as it stands, if we transfer down, we'd rent in Aliante and just keep it simple for us. All her co-workers said they love LV and really encourage her to come down, including another co-worker who just moved down from Reno (she lived here 21 years.)

I had a rather blah meal at the Aliante Casino, but did find a killer Ethiopian restaurant off the strip, and a great Mediterranean place in CH too. We'd really be looking forward to our dining options around the city if we came down, that's for sure.

Glad you liked your Aliante visit. As for the pig farm way over on Ann/5th, we have never smelled that thing at all in the 10 years we lived here. The only time I got a major whiff of it, we were over on 5th street at Kohls on a very hot and windy evening last summer and the smell was horrendous. Could not breathe. I don't know how people work over there. I could not. Luckily it's far enough away. For those who think they are smelling the pig farm in Aliante, I seriously question their sanity.

Someone getting cranky, all well. Just another unhappy realtor, who will tell you everything but the truth to make a sale!

Just trying to help the less fortunate with basic geography. Reading a map is well beyond the capabilities of some here. And we would not want hopelessly incorrect information in the hands of visitors would we?

You didn't read carefully enough because I did mention the pig farm before you. You smell it every day within a 1/2 mile radius, stay clear if you don't like it! Most parts of Aliante won't smell it at all because it's a non-factor over 3 miles away. You may smell it once a month for a few minutes but who cares.

But seriously, why are you mentioning the Apex landfill? "Unlike landfills in other cities, which are often near populated areas, Apex is tucked in the valley of an isolated mountain range 20 miles north of town and about a mile east of I-15. It is surrounded by public land and industrial plants, far enough from any houses that no one ever smells it, but close enough to be economical for Republic. With little annual rain and a 500-foot-thick buffer of packed rock and earth between waste and water table, runoff contamination isn’t an issue." Well it looks like the move is a done deal. What's great is my wife will be working totally from home now and will only have to commute into the VA once a week!

So now we are interested in areas that represent good value, and are safe and clean.

We'd like to rent a small home, no more than 1500 sq ft. No children, so school does not matter.

Thoughts appreciated!
