What about Palm Springs?

I'm asking because I've never been there and don't know.

Isn't it a retirement, resort type of community?

I would see LV heading that direction if there were no casinos.

It is interesting but quite different. PS is a winter resort. It almost shuts down in the summer time. Las Vegas peaks in the summer and drops off in mid winter but is quite active all year around.

People will keep coming to live here as long as there are no state income taxes and everything is cheap.

Palm Springs population: 45,000, Las Vegas metro: 1,900,000. That alone makes it a much different situation.

Sounds like you don't know what you are talking about.

I have no interest (or ability) to make a major American city fail. If I had that kind of power, I wouldn't bother wasting time posting on the Internet as I would be exceptionally powerful and wealthy man and would have no time for such trivialities.

Anyway…I think that people should have realistic expectations before they move to Vegas. The unemployment rate is high, there are few long-term high paying job, the housing crisis iss just settling and the water crisis is ever-present and looming in the future. People should realize that before they commit themselves to moving to an area where there a numerous problems some of which may be intractable. You seem to think human beings should believe media hype instead using skepticism and careful judgement to weigh their available options.

Most people are going to find that Las Vegas will not meet their needs for one reason or another. They have gambling problems, substance abuse issues, employability issues, monetary issues, etc. If they move to an area where the economy is soft and has been for going on a decade, how are these problems (along with the ones that living in Las Vegas will engender) going to be resolved?

You don't seem to be concerned about that and frankly that's pretty sad.

Metro Palm Springs is around 350,000 and it does have a few casinos too! Nothing on the Vegas scale, but they do ok. Without Los Angeles, Palm Springs would most likely be... not there. Or a truck stop on the 10.

well will casinos be closed or move away? what would make them close or move away? They have been here for a long time right? and the city/locals welcome them. chances of this happen will be very slim I guess

There are plenty of non-gambling things to do in Las Vegas, but many of them exist only because gambling money supports them. So if you take away the gambling, much of the shows, restaurants and shopping would go with it.

Gaming is what brings money into the city. Once it's there, it move around like money moves around any town. But if gaming went away, a huge source of financial inflow would be cut off.

On an equally relevant, related note... what would happen to the local economy if a UFO came and killed every living being in Las Vegas? What would happen if we turned the Strip into a nuclear test site?

All of it is just as likely, which makes this whole thread silly.
