I will be moving into town in June.

I know the heat will be searing during the day and have lived in Phoenix during the summer.

Just want to get some insights and feedback to those snow birds who moved to LV.

Did some of you move back because you can't stand the heat, people, culture, etc?

Just need some food for thought...

Moved from the boston area. Lived in Worcester most recently before moving. The only thing that even had me considering leaving was the most horrific allergies I experienced for the first year after moving. The desert is NOT allergy friendly here with all of the imported trees.

Wife and I moved here from Vermont two and a half years ago. No way we would ever move back. We love it here. To us the summers here are no where near as bad as living through a NE winter. Summer heat doesn't bother us at all. Even here I only use A/C in the car on the hottest days. I keep the windows or top down all summer long. I did get hit hard the first spring with allergies. I had never had an allergic reaction in my life. It was only that one spring though. Have not had any issues since.

Hmm. For those of you in Las Vegas who experienced allergies after moving there, how bad were your allergies in New England? I live in Western Mass and I am highly allergic to certain types of tree pollen, so I'm miserable about 6-8 weeks out of the spring/summer. I was really hoping my allergies would be better out there as I wasn't allergic to things when I lived in SoCal. It's kind of discouraging to read they might be just as bad, if not worse, in Vegas.

We just moved here from Rhode Island in June. Yes, it'll be searing heat when you get here (it was 114 the day we arrived). Our only regret is not moving here years ago, but my wife is "born and raised Rhode Island" and they don't move much. I have lived all over, but predominately New England (Western Mass for 10 years, Portland ME, Dover NH, Boston, outside Worcester, and RI).

We miss our friends, but have made MANY new friends here. It is easy if you have interests in common with other people. My wife has traveled back to RI twice - once for a conference, once for a wedding, and she's going back for a week in June. By day 2, she's already homesick for here.

We really love the scenery here, the weather (had enough of the snow yet??), the people, the proximity to other places for day trips, the casinos, our house - everything.

We did a lateral move, meaning we are paying just about the same rent here that we did in RI. The difference is we live in a 2200spft 4bd 3ba house instead of a 1500sqft 2bd 1.5ba condo. But we've found utilities, food, gas, taxes, and insurance to be less here than there. My wife is at CSN in nursing school, and I work from home, so getting a job here wasn't an issue.

The only few things that we found we haven't liked are the build quality of the house (not a huge deal, as we're renting), and the hardness of the water. You will need a water softener, as the water can do some definite damage to skin and hair.

For us, though, the weather is the #1 reason to love it here. It is 6:23am, and 65 degrees, on its way to 90 today. It's the first week of April. I LOVE that.

Good luck, and feel free to message me if you have any specific questions!

They are different allergies, as the fauna is different here. For us, it has been the opposite. My wife would allergies in the spring in New England, but hasn't had them here. Maybe she had a ragweed allergy, or an allergy to another type of plant that isn't found here. But, I do hear that allergies get bad here, especially for new residents. I am assuming it is because of people being introduced to new types of allergens that their body hasn't encountered to a great extent before.

Are you a FT remote tech worker?

Thanks for the insight.

We are leaving a behind LOT of friends and family in Boston. Basically, my entire immediate family lives in Boston. Everyone is like "Why the hell Vegas?"

I won't miss the rainy Spring and long NE winters with very little daylight. Depression creeps in during January-March before the spring solstice. I don't want to live my life hoping JAN-MAR flies by quickly in order to enjoy the Spring. This is the attitude in NE.

Daylight makes me happy. I don't think anyone can wake up and see bright sunshine and say, this day sucks.

I will be working remotely for a Boston company still. It will be nice having extra money from not paying state taxes! No more nasty 93/128 traffic commute.

Whenever someone asks "Why Vegas?", my response is "Why NOT Vegas?"

We had a sprinkle last month at our house (Green Valley area), but before that, not a drop since Nov. 23rd. I hate rain, so this climate is perfect for me.

Yes, sun makes a huge difference. I used to hate Fall because I knew that Winter was right around the corner, and I'd be stuck inside for 5 months (I am not a fan of cold). Bear in mind that we are right on the line of the Pacific Time Zone, so there is about an hour less daylight than you may be used to. But the sun is out virtually every day, and that makes up for it in my mind. I drive out of my neighborhood and can see the Strip on one side, and mountains surrounding the valley. We've been here 10 months tomorrow and STILL say "I can't believe we live here" at least a couple times a week, it's that nice!

I don't miss the commute, although when I lived in Boston, it was in West Roxbury and I would commute to E. Walpole, so only had to deal with Rte. 1. I am in sales, so only need a phone and computer and I can work anywhere in the world. My company is based on the East Coast, so I work 6a-2p or so and then have the rest of the day to do what I want (normally more work, but that's just me).

One of the major draws of this city for us (other than the weather), is that they treat people as adults. We can make choices instead of being told what to do. In RI, if you wanted to go buy a beer, it better not be after 10p, as the liquor stores closed. If I wanted to go to breakfast at 3:00a, you had better be near an IHOP or Denny's. This city is 24 hours a day, and you can do virtually what you want, when you want it. Entertainment is endless. It really is our kind of town. Some people hate it for these very reasons, but it works for us.

Kinda depends on the person & the allergies. My wife is from the Boston area, and she reports Las Vegas in the summer is MUCH better for her than when she visits Boston in the summer.

She finds Las Vegas summers MUCH better, allergy-wise, than the SF Bay Area or even Park City UT.

Awesome insight into your experience in the LV are!. My mind has already moved even though I am physically here packing, giving away stuff, and selling on Craigslist. I hate rain myself. I do tons of running and bicycling. That is the first draw for me to move here! THe roads are smooth and the trails throughout Summerlin is fantastic.

How did you transporting your car as well as household stuff?

I'm looking at moving pods and thinking about driving my minivan down. Overall, it's look like $3500 minimum to cover gas/hotel and pay for moving pod.
