I am wanting to visit Las Vegas in maybe June. I thought about whether to post this in the TRAVEL section of here but because my visit will be odd and not the usual Las Vegas visit, my feeling is that maybe people familiar with the area might offer better advice. First of all, I am not interested in staying on the "strip". I am looking for a hotel that is fairly reasonable ($50 to $75 a day) and prefer one that has a swimming pool. Off strip would be fine but if there is something in that range on the strip that would be OK. Don't care, not gambling or clubbing. The reason I want to visit is to see and take photos of places like Red Rock Canyon, Spring Mountain, Mt Charleston and maybe around Lake Mead if they have any real scenery there. If there are other real beautiful natural places you know of, please advise. I realize that I am not your typical tourist but I am a nature outdoors type and I have visited many places but never the desert.

Best bet for you would be the Santa Fe Station for that price, or midweek at the Red Rock Station. Both have pools, restaurants, etc.

Green Valley Ranch and Red Rock Station are both off the strip and usually have reasonable rates during mid week and/or on non-busy weekends.

Get to Red Rock Canyon as early as you can in the morning. It's a great hike with fantastic photo opportunities but navigating those rock trails when it's 90 degrees can take a lot of the fun out of it. I like going in April before it's too hot.

I always recommend the Element. It's right off the 215 and S. Town Center.

It's a stone's throw from Red Rock preserve and about 35 min from Mt. Charleston.

There is no casino in the hotel, no smoking, pet friendly, eco-friendly and super clean. I think it's more like $150 a day, but worth it.

If you have time, be sure to make the drive to Zion in Utah.

I second Green Valley Ranch or RedRock. I believe with a player's card they are $39 mid-week and $59 weekends. Either puts you right on the 215.

Sante Fe/Redrock/Suncoast.

Valley of Fire/Zion if you get a chance. Id sub Lake Mead out for those 2. But if you do go towards Lake Mead, make sure and visit the Gold Strike Canyon hike. Its one of my favorites in Las Vegas. You can hike it all the way to the Colorado

FTR, i wouldnt call your visit unusual. The outdoors is the reason I moved to Las Vegas. Central location to everything you can think of within 4ish hr drive. Have fun!

Let me agree with everyone about Valley of Fire. I'm going there today to take pictures. A great day would be to drive Lake Mead Blvd to Valley of Fire (the back route, not I-15). Then after driving one-way through Valley of Fire, take I-15 South and head to Mt. Charleston/Cold Creek, and then drive down I-15 to the Jean exit, and head to Goodsprings to cap the day off at the Pioneer.

Mt. Zion is my favorite place in Utah (and that's saying something). Bryce Canyon is also close enough to be a day trip from Las Vegas. I enjoy the stark rugged vistas of Death Valley. But not in June.

I'd stay at Eastside Cannery because it's cheap and close to US-95, which gets you up and running.
