LoL True!

A pro would also be its fairly easy to convince those you want to see to visit.

Pro: 45MPH speed limits on our major streets
Con: 45MPH speed limits on our major streets when I'm walking along those streets

I am finding this to be a problem too. Never in my life have we had so many visitors in just the last few months. I had to put my foot down recently.

No problem here, as I still smoke, and all my close relatives, and even friends, with the exception of two, have quit smoking!

"Oh no! I just couldn't stay some place where someone still smokes in the house!"

I think it's great that my friends from other places visit!

Me too! We're averaging visitors every 6 weeks or so. Some stay in our guest rooms, some opt for hotels. Either way, I love getting to play tour guide and show people around the valley. I just finished my "celebrity homes" tour, as I have a friend coming out who wanted to see the houses where famous people live or lived. It's too bad so many of the really nice ones are gated

Pros: Beautiful sunsets, mountain views, restaurants, easy access to everywhere, McCarren Airport, nice shopping, decent job availability for the educated, 24 hour town, nice trails, nice vibe.

Cons: 100+ temps, hardly any theme parks away from the strip, lack of nice/big public pools (except W n W, finally,) too many poor begging for money, every service expects a tip (UPS store, repairmen, cable guy,) red light runners and people honking too much, 30 year shelf life on homes, too much graffiti, too much trash on the sides of the streets, poor construction on homes, stiff competition with home purchases, Lake Mead is atrocious, too many areas to feel unsafe in.

I lived in Vegas from 1984 until 2010 and have yet to look back...

Just my opinion.

Pros:
  • Weather - sunny, no humidity, hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, mosquitoes. No Snow!
  • Closer to my parents who spend winters in AZ
  • A major airport with flights almost anywhere - this was a must for my career
  • The city is big enough to have what I want but not TOO big - Phoenix was too crowded for me
  • Low housing cost and cost of living, including pretty low taxes
  • Pretty good roads and infrastructure to make my airport commutes pretty easy
  • Open roads where I can ride my motorcycle
  • Beautiful mountains and desert scenery nearby
  • Lots of entertainment options
  • A variety of people from all different backgrounds to meet
  • My friends and family will want to come visit me because the come to Vegas anyhow

Cons:
  • The drivers here are pretty awful, bad enough to give the horrid Florida drivers a run for the title
  • The houses are packed way too close together. There's not enough space for a real yard.
  • The education system sucks. I don't have kids, but may want to someday
  • A lot of ignorant people who don't value education and knowledge - many a product of said education system
  • The summer heat is a bit too much of a good thing.
  • A general lack of community. This is a pretty transient city. People don't know their neighbors and don't care to either.
  • I may end up spending way too much time playing tour guide/hotel manager for relatives.

Before I decided to buy here I talked with my friend who lives in Las Vegas and works in the same industry. He was pretty happy living here and it works well for people who need to travel a lot for their career. Because I travel for my job the local economy wasn't a big factor in my decision. The local pay scales aren't very good for professional/technical careers, so taking a permanent job here isn't too likely.

I am also annoyed by the graffiti and beggars, but every larger city I have been to has those issues.

It's been nearly a year since I bought my house and I'm still happy that I did. The standard of living I can afford here is better than any of the other places that I considered. I haven't met a lot of people yet but that's mostly because I don't work locally and I don't go out a lot on weekends. I have a lot of good conversations with strangers in restaurants and bars - people are generally friendly - but haven't really made any good friends yet.

This would be one of my significant reasons for moving to Vegas. I can see all the people from my past who I haven't seen for years.

Any that I don't want to see are easily avoided by pointing them to cheap hotels so they don't have to stay with me and pointing them to all the fun things to do without me.

I like the fact that my opened saltine crackers stay crisp for months on end.
