Because the people that live in Summerlin are for the most part excessively lazy. The Summerlin elementary school my daughter goes to is a 10 minute or less walk for every person that does not have bus service. About 1/3 of those people are connected by off street trails.

About 150-200 cars drive to the school to pick their kid up and illegally park in the road, blocking bike lanes and crosswalks.

There is a park 500 feet from the school with 100+ parking spaces in it. Most of those spaces are empty because these parents are so lazy they would rather impede traffic, pedestrians and bikers instead of walking one tenth of a mile each way, much less the 1/4-1/2 mile most of them live.

We definitely moving towards the "Wally" society.

You talking about the Ober school with the Willows park next to it?

I have a problem with crossing Town Center Dr where my street turns into. There is just crosswalk, no stop or traffic signs nor crosswalk volunteer. Cars speed like crazy there in the morning. I have to at least walk my kid across the street then he can complete the rest of the way to school.

Yes, it is Ober. There is a trail that goes under Town Center to Willows Park that comes out right next to the school but I suppose you are on the far north end.

There are some neighborhoods across Sahara that should get bus service. There isn't even a marked crosswalk at Blue Willow.

There are some exceptions for people that need to drive. There are 100 unused parking spaces at the park but most people are too lazy to walk that short distance.

I live across from Willows Park. My problem is that 15 parents +/- drive out of our neighborhood only to park illegally in the road. It saves them all of about 3 minutes. One caused my child to get injured running out of the road in our neighborhood after they blew a stop sign as we crossed. She fell in it diving away and got road rash.

Another parent blew threw the crosswalk at the school one day and I had to run out of it when I realized he wasn't going to stop. He was too busy playing with his cell phone to bother to see people crossing the street in a school zone on a crosswalk.

My daughter knew his child and pointed their house out to me. It overlooks Willows Park and the neighborhood has several gated entry points.

It is all just a symptom of excessive laziness and selfishness in society. Even those parents that for one reason or another have to drive refuse to walk 500 feet from legal off street parking because they don't care if anyone besides them or their kids get run over.

As for Ober, the ignored traffic conditions are just one reason we are pulling our child out of it. The school's admin takes the number one spot though.

Bet the traffic on those trails picks up when the weather is more moderate. I run till the pool is warm enough for swimming!

Good insight.

Can you pick another SUmmerlin school which will allow your kid to take the bus?

Not sure what you mean. Some schools that are not overcrowded have open enrollment but if you do that you don't get bus service. Alternatively, your kids can go to the magnet school. Those buses generally pick up/drop off at the closest school.

I've wondered the exact same thing since moving here a couple years ago - I think people here take it for granted. I walk my dog around Pittman Wash every morning and even in June, it's a nice cool 75 degrees at 5:30. I don't have to worry about cars, there are motion-sensored lights at night, available doggy bag dispensers, etc.

These community trails are awesomely maintained and a terrific resource. Definitely nothing like this exists back where I'm from!

I just drove by there and noticed that tunnel is a 2-3 minute walk from the intersection I think you are talking about, assuming you are in Ober's district. That tunnel is a 3-5 minute walk to the school's side gate. It seems like it would be faster, it surely isn't slower.

Convenient indoor treadmills and 24/7 fitness centers and heated swimming pools in their homes or complexes.

This is not a runner/jogger town. When I go to Washington DC I always see people running but not in Vegas.
