I have heard that Las Vegas job market is terrible. However, I do see some jobs in Customer Service on Indeed.com. I am thinking of buying a 1 bedroom condo for $50,000 or less and working a customer service or closely related job. Do you think it is plausible? I only know of Summerlin and I saw a few online but I am not sure. What other safe areas should a single 40 year old woman investigate?

Get your job offer first, then you can move here. Rent the first year and consider purchasing if your job becomes stable.

A 1bdrm in Summerlin is going to be around 80k.

If you want to move here, be sure you have 6 months of living expenses in the bank first, just in case.
You won't be able to qualifiy for a mortgage until you have a job, so renting for a year will give you the opportunity to explore different areas and see where YOU would feel most comfortable

Also, it's pretty difficult to get a job if you don't live here. There are plenty of locals to fill the positions unless you're in a highly sought after career field. Good luck!

That does not sound encouraging. Thanks for your input.

Actually there is a mildly beat up unit in La Posada that is a preapproved short at $54K.

There are also a couple of Rock Spring units that could work. I suspect she could get something workable for under $55K.

I guess if you want a ratty condo that has a Summerlin zip it's doable but if the OP is so tied up in the prestige of a Summerlin name I was assuming OP also wanted a hassle free move in ready condo in a nice area.

Actually my opinion was about the same as yours. I took a look and found no Summerlin units other than that one. I think though I could find a reasonably nice and safe unit right around 50 OR 55k More interesting is no units in that price range in Lone Mountain or Centennial where I would have thought there might be a few. Things have sure moved from a couple of years ago.

Get some good buys in the non-rentable developments. The only problem is they go fast.

There were 1 bdrms going for 10k around Rainbow & Cheyenne back in 2011 that were rent restricted and association fees around 200/month. I tried to get relatives to buy but they were to myopic to see the value. I'm sure the same properties are now worth 60k.

Rent first. So many of the jobs are boiler-room type operations it is very hard to stick with. Really awful! If you find a stable job you can live with, buy!
