My company offered me to take a position at a Las Vegas office. Currently I live in a nice suburb in Cleveland Ohio, Willoughby Hills.
My compensation will be 60K gross plus benefits; medical insurance, pension plan etc. I am single in my 50th. Kids are grown and are on their own. I need advice on nice areas to rent, I am not sure I want to buy a house or a condo for the first two years. I am not in gambling, so casino life doesn't attract me, heat for a few month I will tolerate. I've been to LV several times summers included and like the city, most what I am going miss of course is luck of green, I notices green grass and trees are scares in LV. I haven't have a chance to travel outside LV desert, mountains etc. All my tips were business trips.
Please let me know if you have any constructive advice or share your experience especially if you are from the same area I am.
Sam.

When offered a transfer I wasn't given much options LV or Detroit. I hate Detroit and yes I wouldn't might to live the cold behind me. Winter in Ohio is 4-5 month. I looked up one bedroom apartments for a start and they are between $600 -$800 per month compatible to the area I live now. A two bedroom condo around 150K-160K Cost of living very close where I live now

Sam.
I expect you will like it. There are green places if you hunt around a bit. My home for instance is quite green with only the palm trees and cactus saying it is not in Cleveland.

There are reasonable places to live all over town. Pick one convenient to where you work. Basically stay near or outside of the 215 for a start.

A regular member here Airic is from Cleveland and still has ties there. If he does not come along soon drop him a DM.

At the office they keep telling me that cost of living in LV is lower than in Cleveland. What is 60K gross in LV. A friend of mine lives in San Diego and he said 60K is a laughable salary. A one bedroom will cost you at least 2500 in a good area. Any way I am looking forward to move and if I'll have to I’ll get me apart time job or find a better paying job or whatever life will offer, at this time I was offered LV. I am sure I will love it and will meet wonderful people and friends.

You can't compare San Diego to Las Vegas in any way that I know of. First of all, San Diego is one of the most expensive places to live in the country. $2500 a month in Las Vegas will get you a big house. In San Diego it might get you a studio apartment.

I imagine the cost of living in Las Vegas is lower than Cleveland too. Especially food and utilities.

It's hit and miss.. there are some differences.. The reason it is cheaper to live is that there is no state or local income tax. That saves you some.. Housing (To own..not to rent) is less once you have the house. Property taxes are much less as very little goes towards the schools. Count on a 1000. for a nice place. Utilities average out. Since Ohio, you are paying alot to heat in the winter, here it is for the electric for the summer. It is NOT a few months of hot. May to October is hot. August is a furnace. Your license plates are much more expensive here as it depends on what you drive... old car = cheaper bmw or mercedes could cost you a thousand a year.... Insurance is about the same.

Willoughby Hills will be comparable to Summerlin. It's expensive but not unreasonable.

Traffic is 10x more here than in Cleveland.... Clevelands Busiest day on 90 = a normal day on 15

Some of the best people you will meet are right here on this board. I've had my house for 5 years, only know 3 neighbors in the development.. it is different.

As for jobs, what are you doing for 60k... if its casino related, it could be brutal.... I took a pay cut to go to the job I have now but to me it was worth it.. Moving here, i thought the future for me was in a casino.. it wasn't and I'm glad i'm out of it.

Medical in my opinion is hit and miss also here... Both my wife and I were very sick. I had open heart surgery at Summerlin Medical Center. It was top notch in my opinion. I've known a few that have gotten lousy service at the Cleveland Clinic. Your health insurance is VERY important... if it's with Health Plan of Nevada, you might as well be uninsured... At least on my plan, it has gotten much worse due to Osamacare. I have lost all of my doctors, Surgeon, Cardiologist, and General Doc...

Do I like it here compared to Cleveland. the benefits outweigh the negatives for me... Weather is much much much much much better here. Last I checked, you couldn't shovel heat. But I don't drink, gamble, or party. If i was single, i don't think this would be the place for me.

Hope that helped.. oh.. and bring some Skyline Chili and Chick-filet with you when you arrive..

Welcome Sam! 60K in Las Vegas is like making 72K in Cleveland and here, you don't have to shovel and freeze. But you will sweat a lot! I would take Vegas over Detroit too. I've lived all over and I still love Las Vegas. If you are open to new experiences, you could have a lot of fun here!

My best advice is to rent for 6 months while you scope the place out and learn the lay of the land. Get used to the driving, traffic, and your commute. Explore different areas of town and see where you want to live. If you still like it here after 3 months or so start looking for a more permanent place to live.

Another thing you need to know. Living here, you will have guests/company. Especially your Ohio friends in the Winter.
