The only industry this is going to hurt is Limos.
I can think of one scenario. When a popular show at MGM is over, people flood to the taxi line...long long line.
But if you have an appointment with Uber driver, he/she comes pick you up at an agreed spot (for example, MGM parking structure level 3, parking spot A24. There you go, you don't have to wait in long lines!!!

And how does George and Martha from Saskatchewan supposed to know when they've been long-hauled?
All they gotta do is look at the sign at the airport and they'll know.

^^^^ Yup!

Facts don't matter at all!

It's all: " I don't like something but won't lift a finger, YOU need to fix my problem."

I have paid 90 $ Taxi from airport to our house in summerlin last year.

That included automatic tip of 24 $ in receipt . I paid with credit card.

I didn't know about tip being included automatically in receipt and I gave tip to driver in cash (15 $).

He didn't say nothing.

One hour later my wife looked at receipt and said why I tipped driver twice !!

Only then I discovered what happened.

I called taxicab office and talked to manager. He refunded me my 24 $ tip from receipt.

Since then I never took ant taxy in this town.

I think it is time to sit back and watch it unfold. The cabbie demonstration yesterday was actually pretty mild...Less than 100. So no real fire in the opposition to Uber.

And there has got to be all sorts of interesting things happening as it unfolds.. Gridlock? Bans from airport or casinos? Guerrilla activity? A fare war?

Or maybe it works out all peaceful with Uber outside the strip mostly and the cabs mostly inside.
Answered my own question actually, looks like drives will start sooner then that, July 1st....

Better to get picked up away from the MGM. The parking garage is a nightmare after a show. We've taken to parking one casino over. (Doesn't matter which direction -- pick whatever is convenient based on where you're heading.)

So if I was meeting an Uber driver after an arena show, I'd meet in the Tropicana parking lot. Much, much quicker that way.

That isn't it, at all.

If bank tellers were only forced to be accurate if a customer noticed he or she was being short changed, that wouldn't be right either.

And having these same parallel-universe bank tellers insist online, "So what? Moron. If you discover one of us cheating you, just call the Banking Commission," wouldn't make anyone more sympathetic.

"Hello, banking commission? Yes, I just withdrew $2,000 from my account, but the teller only gave me $1,900 and slipped the extra bill into his pocket. No, I can't hold, I have to go to work!"

The fact that the two cabbies can't see what's wrong with this position speaks volumes. Sorry you two can't enjoy your little monopoly anymore. Actually, no I'm not sorry. I hate monopolies. Monopolies suck.

In the 2 months since that article was written, Carl Icahn has invested $100 Million into Lyft to compete with Uber. With Uber approaching a $50 Billion valuation, these 2 companies alone are going to be more valuable than the entire taxi system in the U.S. In 3-5 years time, the question will not be whether ride-sharing can compete with taxis, it will be "Why are taxis even around at all?" They will simply not make any sense from an investor standpoint, nor a customer standpoint, nor a driver standpoint.

Cabbies are toast.
