Does anyone know if uber still plans to launch in vegas and if so when? They are accepting applicants I've seen on craigslists but doesn't mean open for business yet. I know the cab companies are fighting against it. Thoughts?

I guess if it brings down transportation costs for some people it's a good thing.

The taxi cab owners have successfully fought off any kind of competition from horse and buggies, monorails, etc., for at least six decades in Las Vegas, so I wouldn't bet on Uber. Here's an article from the RJ: Uber eyeing Vegas, and cab companies not happy | Las Vegas Review-Journal

I wouldn't do it... there is to much risk involved with fines.

btw, uber is valued at over 18 billion dollars. WTF!!!

Ride-sharing firm Uber's valuation soars to $18.2 billion*-*Los Angeles Times

I'm reminded of Napster. A blatantly illegal operation somehow made semi-legal just because it can be done easily and cheaply.

Uber was obviously founded by someone who saw this article: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/15/ny...vers.html?_r=0

Must be one heck of a lot of graft and corruption behind the NYC cab business to charge $1 million per license while Uber does it for virtually zero. And Uber does a better job of it, IMHO.

I say allow Uber to operate in Vegas and see if they can compete with the cab companies. My guess is that if that were to happen, the cab companies would be hurting badly and Uber would do fine.

And Uber is not the only one doing this. Check out Lyft.

You're new to the valley, yes? There's a reason the monorail doesn't go to the airport. People have ended up dead for lesser offenses than screwing the cab cartel- excuse me, I meant the Taxi Authority.

Uber is coming and I for one can't wait for it. I'm going to give referrals to every tourist I meet. Las Vegas thrives on tourism, and cabs are the one place they are treated like absolute crap. 30 minute cab lines, inability to hail a cab, long-hauls...no wonder so many drink and drive here. Last month I tried to be responsible, so I took a cab home after a friends birthday party on the Strip. The cabbie tried to shortchange me before threatening to call the police. When that didn't work, he tried to pull me out of the cab while I called Metro!

Uber is already here, in a way. Visitors in LA can take a round-trip to Vegas for one-night stay and back...baby steps.

Yeah I had a not so pleasant experience in my last cab ride. I was going from the airport to hooters hotel and the guy had the nerve to run the cab by taking I15! As soon as we got there I asked him why he didnt just take Tropicana and lied about missing an exit. If this happens to you call the taxi cab authority right away (illegal for them to do and will usually just leave the fare) a very nice cab driver told me once before if I was ever in that situation. Also take note of their cab number id when you get in.
