We live here but we keep a place in California and we generally rent a minivan (or sometimes a full size SUV) when we go back; it's the easiest thing we've found for hauling our 3 Greyhounds in. We're going to be doing a lot of back and forth over the summer, plus having house guests flying in and our cars (a sedan and a Bronco with no back seat) don't really fit our upcoming needs. We thought we should just rent a minivan for the month, so I reserved one from Enterprise for $800 with unlimited mileage for the month. I checked Kayak and that was the best deal I could find.

I was wondering if a local car rental place (the type you don't find on Kayak and the type that might have a slightly older fleet) might have something cheaper? I've looked online a bit but a lot of them don't have websites so I don't know who's reputable or affordably priced. Anyone have any recommendations?

Check costotravel (get coupon from costco online) , bjs.com, and also priceline. The prices vary like the stock market day to day so check and rebook often.

I flew in a couple of weeks ago and used Dollar. What a disaster that was. Two bad cars to start, and the wait to pick up was an hour.

We used Enterprise next and the customer service was top notch. Really, we were impressed. I'd stick with them. Also we checked in at the kiosk (already reserved on priceline,) then walked down to pick up the car. No wait in line.

I get my rentals on Priceline, because you can compare all the prices easily. It's a good way to compare. Also...William Shatner.
