That's not uninformed, that's someone's opinion.

and the nfl is more popular than soccer.
I'm not sure if anyone even said that in this thread, but in the United States that is a 100% true statement.

Last years nailbiter super bowl drew less than 100mil.
False. If you're going to insult people at least get your facts straight.

The opening game of the World Cup drew 2.5 BILLION.
How nice for the world cup. Soccer fans like to use this argumentum ad populum constantly, but honestly is that supposed to change anyone's opinion about soccer?

You are correct--'so the super bowl draws about 5% the audience of a World Cup.

See you're hopelessly caught up in a fallacy. You trying to denigrate football doesn't make soccer look one iota better.

I'm not slamming the nfl. Its the best sport in the whole United States. Perhaps instead of the world wide web, we could use the American wide web.

Yeah, the American Wide Web thing...it wasn't especially witty the first time that you tried it. I'm sorry to inform you that it still isn't.

Go figure. You're posting on a Las Vegas, NV forum. Were you aware that Las Vegas, NV, is in the United States? Why wouldn't we call it soccer, since we are in the United States?

The easy way to shut these people up is to remind them that America was building the largest-ever stadiums around the turn of the 20th century to watch football. When the FIFA rules were being drawn up, the Yale-Harvard football rivalry was already more than 50 years old. Hundreds of thousands of spectators filled the great stadiums (bowls) when soccer was little more than an intramural attraction. That's why the Rose Bowl and the Super Bowl and all the rest of the bowl games are so named -- because of the Yale Bowl and the Yale-Harvard football rivalry.

And for some reason we're supposed to give up a sporting tradition that reaches back to the US Civil war, simply because people in Brazil and Europe enjoy a different game. Australian Football came first. American football came second. Soccer is a distant third. So when Australians start insisting that we call our game something other than "football," I'll listen to their position.

What in the world are you talking about. Nobody said anything about you giving up football. If you wish to be in the 5% that prefers American football that is your option.

Just for those who have not done any research on the matter, the term football was first documented in England in the year 1409. They had been playing the since 1200.
