Something fun is going up someplace with raised elevation where you can overlook the whole valley. Last year we lived near Bruce Trent Park in Summerlin and went up their big hill. Got a 360 degree view of ALL the fireworks. One of the coolest things I've ever seen.

This year we're hoping to figure out something up North. Centennial Hills Park maybe...

If you park in the park, there's a walking path to what looks like a big hill of dirt with a walking path to the top, not entirely sure what it's called. Follow all the cement blocks.

I uploaded a cellphone panorama picture to my C-D folder - it's lousy, but will give you a general idea of what I mean. Stratosphere is directly in the center.

It seems like half of Las Vegas congregates in front of our house to watch the fireworks, twice each year. The "official" display pales in comparison to the thousands (hundreds of thousands is probably more like it) lighting off their ill-gotten pyrotechnics.

Besides Pahrump, there is also the Paiute reservation. I've never heard first-hand from anyone whose fireworks were confiscated by the cops. However, my in-laws who work at UMC tell me that nobody is allowed to take a vacation or a day off on July 4. They need every person they can get to deal with the powder burns, dismemberment and other associated horror. Most of these people have no business being around explosives when they're sober, let alone on July 4 after drinking a gallon-and-a-half of Tecate.

WR, don't think there is nothing to burn in the desert. And it is extremely dry right now due to the long drought we've had.

Sure -- drive east on Charleston until you hit Hollywood. Then just drive in either direction on Hollywood until you see mass throngs of people shooting off rockets and lighting M-80s and generally behaving badly.

A few years ago we went to the Paiute reservation's fireworks display. Tons of people grilling and drinking in the parking lot. The show itself was pretty good, but the real draw was everyone lighting off hardcore stuff they bought at the store there, which stayed open to allow people to re-supply the entire time.

Be sure to ask him to grill you something. The man can cook.

Last 4th of July, we were in that neighborhood when Mt. Charleston caught on fire. I was convinced it was fireworks that caused it, but apparently it wasn't. It was a nasty fire and burned for weeks before they got it under control.

If you are going to set off illegal fireworks, the desert is the wrong place. ( Not that there is a GOOD place) Find a parking lot that is not near homes. Make sure you have a couple of buckets of water handy.

Several years ago, I saw the aftermath of a bottle-rocket gone awry. It landed in someones convertible. When the tires exploded, it was like a movie.

Dear Neighbors with the big fireworks who keep setting them off at night: The 4th is tomorrow. Not yesterday, and not anytime during the past week. Somehow you keep managing to set your fireworks off when I've got my dogs in the backyard trying to do their business. Now one is afraid of going out after dark. Which one of you is going to come over and clean my rug????

Sincerely, a neighbor who wishes you'd knock it the &#$&#* off.
