Easy answer: The convention industry and the continual exposure from Hollywood. Atlantic City never really had either.

Hollywood helped Vegas out a lot. You have so many Las Vegas-based shows in theatres and on television now. Off the top of my head, I can think of:

The Hangover (part 1 and 3)
Pawn Stars
Flipping Vegas
American Restoration
American Casino
Bad Girls Club
Casino Confidential
Celebrity Poker Showdown
Counting Cars
Tanked
What happens in Vegas

As much as Nevadans love to gripe about California and poke fun at us, Hollywood has helped the city immensely through so much media exposure, which piques curiosity and leads to tourism.

We had a business conference there in 2011. It used to alternate between the east and west parts of the country. People liked it so much and they got such a good deal that despite the sponsoring company being heaquartered in Orlando, they have kept it in Las Vegas ever since. They already announced it for 2015 again in Las Vegas. I suppose as things improve even more the prices may go up, but you can't beat $69 rooms for a conference rate at a major resort hotel

Default It is simply an exceptional place to meet for any number of purposes and spend a few days.

The PTB got it partially correct. They did away with the centering of the enterprise on gambling and went with a much broader view. Make it a neat place for a week whatever it is the tourist wishes.

That is why we should build a domed stadium. It completes the set. Provides another venue for world class events...and it should be a spectacular stadium...simply because this is Vegas and we wish it to be the best at what it does.

And then we need to fill in a half dozen more establishments down the strip. More rooms and more variety.

I think we need legal Marijuana just so we provide the sterling experience so Denver does not slice off those who wish it.

Same sex marriage? But of course...should be there already if we were doing the right thing.

Prostitution? Perhaps not legal. The oldest profession always creates a problem. Perhaps we need to figure how to control it withou making it legal.

Perhaps maybe it's time to make a deal with Nye County? Person dials a specific phone #, a car drives them out here, they do their thing, drives them back & somehow everyone gets a piece of the pie [pun intended]

Add to the above the propensity for Californians to come East to LV and spend their money - particularly on weekends. Simply put, without Californians, business in LV would be significantly lower. Yet, most residents of Las Vegas don't seem to pass up many chances to bag on the residents of our next door neighbor.

Don't know how anyone can be surprised by AC tanking, talk about a cesspool

Once you get off the boardwalk, you go right into a 3rd world country. The casinos never re-invested money to improve the hotels, they figured they would ride the boxing train to profitability but when states like Maryland, Delaware and West Virginia got their own casinos in new houses, the well dried up for AC.
