i wanted the closest thing to a "suburb"... i am in the northwest near Aliante and love it... nice and quiet.. if i had to make 1 change, it would be a 1 floor house, not 3. They just built a 2900sf 1 floor around the corner, but there is no way i'd pay 480k......

What else should I know about Las Vegas? Other than the hot weather, what other pros and cons are there?

Thanks!
The community likes to take care of people who need to find a great place to live. They are willing to advise folks time and time again! I like the Fremont street.

pros here: weather, cost of living, property taxes, no affect on insurance when you get a ticket, and food.. lots of it.. plus the ability to get what you want, when you want.

cons: People (its different, no waving when you pull out of the driveway), Brown instead of green.. but you don't have to cut the grass or shovel snow, Heat for 3mos...,

everything to me is workable... i don't have kids so cant comment on schools... medical... i rate it above average, i had open heart last year, wife had breast cancer 2012, and now waiting to see if it returned (last couple weeks.. ovarian issues)...

the only surprise... the cost to fly back to Cleveland has SKYROCKETED. Remember the $200 roundtrip tickets.. those days are gone.. closer to $500 now..
Can you expound on the "no affect on insurance when you get a ticket"?

We have ticket busters. When I first moved here, I received a ticket for 27mph over the speed limit on the highway. Paid $49 for the ticket service. Reduced to parking violation. No insurance issue. Wife had similar experience...lowered to parking violation

If I were to get a ticket, I'd be on the phone with one of those ticket-busting law firms. Sure. It's the law of the land, so we all may as well use it to our best advantage.

But I am completely against allowing consequence-free driving. If there were repercussions to driving like a fool, less people would do it. This is an easy fix -- speed and you get points and pay higher premiums for years. The reason people run red lights, speed through school zones, and down my street at 4am is because they can. Get rid of the loophole and this will stop.

Problem solved.

Anyone here a golfer? I did a search on google and it seems that it costs a lot more to play golf in LV vs the midwest. I assume it is because of the water bill.

I am assuming you are looking for daily fee courses. There are many really good courses here, and compared to what you would pay in the summer at a Metroparks course like Big Met or Sleepy Hollow or Ellsworth Meadows in Hudson, fees likely will be higher here during the best times of year for golf. However, there still are some good deals out there for residents. While it is a bit of a drive, I have heard that the Primm Valley Golf Club courses are quite nice. They also appear to be reasonably priced. Here is a link to more information: Golf Course Las Vegas | | Primm Valley Golf. I am sure others can offer other suggestions for daily fee courses where the fees might be in the $30 to $40 range per person similar to the Ohio courses I mentioned.

Thanks again
I would recommend checking out neighborhoods near The District at Green Valley Ranch in Henderson assuming that is not too far from where you will be working.

I grew up in the Midwest, and I still have family in Michigan and northeast Ohio. Relatively speaking, the population may be more transient in Las Vegas than in the Midwest. However, we have not found it very difficult to make new friends, and only a small number of our friends have moved out of state over the last several years. I also know all of my neighbors, and we all wave to each other and talk to each other. In fact, I believe we were the first new household on our street in about ten years when we moved into our current house a few years ago.
