So as I move to Las Vegas next week, one of my concerns is how to get to and from nightlife locations safely without risking a DUI. In San Diego, I would typically drive CAR2GO out to the bars, and then hop in Lyft for the ride home. End result is my car stays at home all night, I'm safe, and don't spend a ton of money to get around. If a CAR2GO isn't in close proximity, then I would just take Lyft both ways.
Based on the Uber thread, it seems Las Vegas has had no success in injecting these awesome alternatives to taxi cabs into the city. Is it pretty much taxis or busses only for getting around? Other there any other services out there that people have used? I had little success in searching the internet on this issue.

Getting a cab? It's not that expensive to get to the Strip from anywhere in Las Vegas... especially when you consider that the drinks you'll be buying are $16 each.

We just go with friends and take turns driving.. round-robin type of thing. We watch out for each person in our group to make sure everyone is alright. But if you don't know anyone in the city, then yeah, taxis or a bus. Depending on the neighborhood, you might have places to which you can walk, as well.

I prefer other options than cabs because I often find cabs unreliable. Mainly for getting out vice getting home. You have to call some terse dispatcher who gives you an inaccurate estimate of arrival time and then you have no idea where your cab actually is or when it will get there. Much easier to get home via cab because they're always out and about near the night spots. But then in a cab at the end of your ride you have to fumble through your wallet, usually while wasted, to pay the taxi driver, who will give you an attitude for asking for change, or won't have $$ in the proper denominations, or you pay a surcharge to use a credit card (assuming he can accept one). Also if you get poor service, and therefore you choose not tip as much as normal, you now potentially have a pissed off dude who knows where you live. There's just a lot of better options, that are safer and more reliable out there. I know Las Vegas doesn't have any of the big names (Lyft or Uber), but was hoping there were some smaller scale options. With Lyft and Uber all payment is done via your smart phone within a certain time (I think it's 24 hours) after your ride is complete. You tip at your discretion, and drivers never see how much you tip them, so you never deal with a driver bitching or complaining about his tip. If you do have an unpleasant experience with a driver, then that driver will never be matched with you again. It is just light years better than a taxi.

There is an outfit called "designated drivers" who will take you home in your own car for $60 + 5 for each 10 miles passed 10. I think there are a couple more of those around.

1. You won't do your power drinking on the strip. Once you hit the strip a couple times it becomes old hat and you will find a local casino or watering hole.

Heck, as long as you're near a major thoroughfare, LV has an efficient and effective public transport system. Like any other major city, though, get off the major arteries and you either have to walk a ways or wait longer.

If you don't have to get wasted you're ok driving having a drink an hour or so. I've only once ever seen a road block on my way home and I think that wasn't necessarily set up to catch drunk drivers. If you think you have had TOO much, most areas have rooms you can pick up for a reasonable price...especially if your are near Fremont St. hotels or Hooters and or motels around that South end...Rooms in a lot of places would probably be cheaper than a taxi home if you live 20 minutes away in any direction from the Strip.
