Vegas is supposed to be fun and campy.

Go to Caesars. Or Luxor, or even Excalibur, if you can deal with the kids.

Just North of SLS are several of the old motels that are still open - and they've changed very little over the last 50 years. I love watching the original (1960) Oceans Eleven where they pass through that area several times and you get a good look at it. Places like Fun City are clearly visible - and still look the same. Ratings are low for these properties - now THAT's campy.

That's why I stay downtown, never on the strip. At least Vegas Vic is still there! The strip is becoming one big collection of what looks like office buildings instead of fun resort properties.

Read an interesting article talking about how it is a shame that none of the old building have been preserved. Imagine if the Sands or the Dunes had been maintained and allowed to grow and flourish? Those places would be the most popular places to go as so many people crave "vintage Vegas." There is a petition out there asking that the LVCC at least try to keep part of the Riviera for history sake.

Vegas seems to think that its past is disposable. It's a shame, because it has one of the most interesting histories of any city in this country.

You have inadvertently hit the nail on the head. Las Vegas' past is disposable. And so is its future. Resorts exist to wring as much money as they can out of the losers* who patronize them. And then they tear everything down and replace with bigger and better versions of the "Temple of greed and vice."

That's the Las Vegas way. Since when has it been any other way?

Most Las Vegans spell that word "looser".

I like what replaced them much better. The Sands gave way to The Bellagio and the Dunes gave way to The Venetian.

If I want history I go Downtown. One of the exciting things about The Strip is it's continually evolving and changing.

Those are a couple of the last that still have some character (though Bellagio is mostly interesting to me because of the fountains, the place itself isn't too exciting). The latest crop of properties such as Aria and the like...I yawn as I pass them. I feel like I am in a corporate office park. BOR-RING!

My interactions with the older properties over the years tended to show them as being dumps. The new properties tend to be much nicer.

Maybe back in the day they were nice places, but the ones that I've seen didn't age well.
