My SO's cousin is moving here from New York City. He is almost 65 and on disability but will soon get Social Security as well. He wants to move here because the COL is so much lower. He has never driven a car so he will rely on the bus for transportation. Right now his total income is only $800 per month. I don't know him personally yet but I can't even imagine living in NYC on that amount of money!

Does it sound like he would qualify for section 8 here? And is there a long waiting list?

Would be happy to hear whatever you know about this type of living arrangements.

Yellowsnow, call Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority. The waiting list was a couple of years last I heard. The gentleman won't be getting disability and social security because disability turns into social security once you've reached that age.

Without a car, it might be pretty awful. Las Vegas does not have the best transit system, and to be disabled and trying to rely on it for transportation might be bad.

Last I heard, Section 8 is not even taking people on a waiting list.

In addition, because he has been on disability and not working and because that disability comes out of his working fund, his s.s. check will be much lower than others the same age would be drawing.

That's what I was afraid of. The waiting list being so long that they aren't even taking applications. I di find several senior apartment complexes that have rent based on income so I guess he will end up at one of these.

He's probably better off in NYC. Market rate housing is much more expensive, but NYC has a much larger public housing system. Where (as in what type of housing) is he living in now.

In addition, the public transportation system is eons better, and NYS has a separate public transportation system for the disabled. Finally, all aspects of NYC's social services system is much more developed, and it sounds like this is the type of person who needs them.

To be blunt, I think this person would be roadkill in Vegas. Vegas works well if you're self sufficient. You can be lower income but self sufficient and be fine. If you can't really self sufficient, it isn't the place.

He might also try to get on Section 8 in NY and then move. I have no idea how Section 8 is there but LV is pretty much the Section 8 pits. I believe you need to be on it a year before you can move.

I've never met the guy so you may or may not be right. I know he does have some connections here. He does have his own apt in NYC. He says the COL is hurting his savings so he's not penniless. His income will go up some after(Ithink)66.

I am still trying to talk him out of spending big $ on moving used furniture from NYC to here...

I did find a couple places that charge rent based on income. I'm checking them out tomorrow.

Agree 100% about the bus thing. I don't think I could function without a car here. But he has spent a lot of time here over the years and he thinks it's doable. He has always been on foot/bus here for sometimes three weeks at a time.
