Lights out for smokers in Vegas? - Travel Weekly

Interested to see if smoke-free casinos will become a trend here. If China (of all places!) can ban casino smoking, surely we can too.

money quote:
“It’s a major trend,” Frick said. “And it’s also what people increasingly expect.”

In addition, all public places in Nevada other than casino floors, including many poker rooms and sports books, are already smoke-free. Even the World Series of Poker became a smoke-free event for the first time in 2014, as are many other events on casino floors.

Frick believes it is just a matter of time before a full ban is put in place.

“There is no question that eventually the Vegas casinos will be one-hundred percent smoke-free,” he said.

What bs. I do not smoke, just to be clear.
Ninnys are ruining the country. Soon, drinking and gambling will be outlawed here.
Frick is right. Frick this.

EA, I'll have to respectfully disagree. They are not banning smoking. You just have to move to a designated area (usually outside in a corraled area).

Let me tell you a good story on this.

I have a friend. He's a smoker. Never could meet any girls at the bar or club. Once they banned smoking in Boston area night clubs and restaurants, he is able to meet chicks and conversate with them in the designated smoking areas MUCH EASILY. In fact, that's how he met his wife (and hookup with a few chicks along the way)!!!!

I smoked for decades.. 2 packs a day, quit 3 or so years ago... My opinion on this hasn't changed one bit, the government has no legitimate authority to dictate to private businesses what they do on their property. Market forces will decide how much smoking/non smoking is appropriate for any given area way better than stuffed suits trying to buy votes.

I like the trend toward non-smoking.

Actually they do and dictate what businesses can/can't do quite frequently... even here in NV. If you mean "legitimate" as in "moral authority" to dictate, then that's a different argument. But legally speaking, they do have the authority.

Because casinos are open to the public, the government has to protect the public. Inhaling second hand smoke is not an option. Most often city health department is involved in this law enforcement. It is no different than protecting consumers from the ill-effects of inproper food handling at restaurants.

You can always have a private (membership only) club that is all about indoor smoking.

This is not some sort of freedom taking if you ask me. When government takes away a right to something optional, then it is taking away personal freedom.

Yes I am a non-smoker and non-gambler.

While along this topic, I don't agree with government banning super-size sodas and hi-caffeine (think Red Bull x 4 concentration) drinks in NYC.

Isn't the smoking ban one of the reasons all the Atlantic City casinos are going belly up?
