Has anyone gone the whole year without using heat?

What are you alternative ways to heat with the sun through the windows? For me, I am using a fan to move air in the sunny spots of the house. Not sure if this really helps.

I am hoping for a $20 gas bill. My house is 3BR/2BA around 1650sf

Only if you can tolerate it. I handled cold better than most people and still needed to turn the heater on at least 10-15 days and also used a space heater near the bed. Without heat I saw inside temps at times in the mid 50s even on the second floor.

Is your front door facing east? I think this makes a good difference.

Last winter I used the heat for only 10 days or so. I use the crockpot a lot in the winter and that adds heat to the house too.

An electric blanket helps, too! I did that when I didn't want to run the heat.

It really doesn't matter as much as you would think. I had a 2nd floor master bedroom and living room/kitchen both facing south which you would think would be as good as it gets and it still was cold. Sun just isn't at a strong enough angle to give you the boost needed to not use the heat at times of the year when the lows are in the high 30s/low 40s.

When I was a poor college student in the Northeast and could hardly pay heating bills, we were able to hold off using heat until February. It's kind of crazy thinking back.

Never in my life.

We turned the heat on last night. Even my wife, who usually thinks the colder the better, was cold last night.

Why put yourself through that if you can afford it? Please explain. That's almost like choosing to use an outhouse in order to not have to flush the toilet. I hate the feeling of bone chilling cold. We haven't run the heat yet but I took out the goose down comforter last week. Got the space heater on stand-by and will switch the dial when it's time. I have no idea how the Indians did it back when. Thank God for modern convenience.

It saves money! And energy.

I love my down comforter too. I am always happy to get it out, stuff it into the duvet cover and put it on the bed. Like a luxurious layer of weightless warmth! And of course all the windows are open!

I've never been through anything remotely bone-chilling here. But remember I did live in Minnesota.
