A few weeks ago at about 1:00 in the morning I was awaken by my two labs barking up a storm. They had heard a coyote barking and howling outside our house and had gone out through their doggie door to investigate.

I looked out the window and saw the coyote sitting on the outside side of the wall that separates my yard from the desert; my dogs were sitting on the inside. For the moment all was quiet. The dogs stopped barking and the coyote stopped howling.

Just then a neighborhood cat started crossing in front of our gate and was just about to go around the corner where the coyote was sitting. When my dogs saw the cat, they started barking up a storm again, and the frightened cat spun around and ran the other way. Fortunately, the coyote was also frightened by my dogs’ loud barking, and took off in the opposite direction back into the desert.

I’m not saying that the cat should be leashed, but it certainly isn’t safe for him to be roaming about the neighborhood so close to the desert in the middle of the night.

It is the old La Canada rule. Cats never get to be 11. That is because between 10 and 11 they lose 50 milliseconds in the time it takes to get up on the garage roof. That is all the Coyotes need.

In general out here in the NW the rules are actually different. And we have a feral cat (Biffer) who lives on our patio. The Coyotes have learned that there are big Labradors and Pit Bulls and Dobermans behind the walls. They don't cross them which they can easily do. So the cats are safe as long as they have access to a wall. The Coyote won't follow. A year or so ago I watched a Coyote and a cat pass on a back road one morning. Cat stayed right next to the wall. Coyote on the other side of the road. You could almost here the calculation. And the cat did jump on the wall as the Coyote got to her rear. It is really the cat that has to be careful...sometimes there are two coyotes....

I used to have cats up until about 25 years ago, and since then have had dogs. But I have way more funny cat stories than I do dog stories. Dogs are lovable, and protective, but cats are more entertaining. And a whole lot smarter than dogs or humans.

I was walking on the Pueblo Trail yesterday where there are more ground squirrels than there are rocks, and I saw a whole herd of cats hanging out. I think they are probably feral cats that make a good living there with all the available food. There are rabbits there too. I read once that cats dispatch more rabbits than all the hunters combined.
