Dear Forest,

You are SO lucky!

Sinus infections are bacterial infections of the sinuses in your head, under and over the eye socket. The symptoms can vary from person to person. For example, many people get intense pain in their sinuses from the infection. I don't, thank God. In either case, yucky, thick, green and yellow mucus is produced and get impacted in the sinuses. You have constant stuffiness, constant futile blowing, and post-nasal drip, which is a disgusting condition in which the mucus runs down the back of your throat causing your to cough and choke.

In the acute phase, the treatment is antibiotics.

In between active infections, there are numerous treatments to try to minimize the chances of getting a new infection. People use nasal sprays, both OTC and prescription, irrigate the sinuses with a neti pot, use a humidifier, and get sinus surgery. I have done all of those.

I'm surprised to read that you all say the hot, dry weather didn't help you in the long run. If that is so, then I have to rethink what I need to do, or where I need to go.

I live in NYC where it is humid all year. My experience is that I only get sinus infections during the winter. Starts in November and comes off and on through March. I am almost never sick in the summer. That's why I want year-long heat. But perhaps I should consider humid heat. Ugh! Oh, the thought! I hate humidity. But maybe it is moist heat that helps me during the summer.

Oh, there was also the thought (posted above) that it is the dry heat in the house during the winter that is the cause of winter sinus problems. (I have always assumed it was the cold weather outside, getting chilled, etc.) I never considered that it was the indoor heat. I will have to pull out my humidifier and give that another try. Thank you.

Thank you all for your thoughtful responses!

A sinus infection ( different from chronic sinusitis) is a bacterial infection in the sinus cavities. It's often secondary to a cold or inflammation from allergies. You'll experience pressure and a headache centered in your face, and God help you if you bend over or someone touches the sides of your nose. The biggest sign of a sinus infection though, is greenish yuck in your Kleenex.

It's treated with antibiotics, but that doesn't always work for people with chronic sinus problems.

I had a bad cold and sinus last week.

My ultimate treatment is my own personal concoction.

Honey Lemon tea with 2 tbsp coconut Oil and bit of turmeric twice a day. Also I made chicken feet for a collagen broth to reset my GI so that it could get rid of the bugs more efficiently.

Cold was gone in 2 days. I was back to running.

I use chicken feet in my broth too. I guess I'd better warn my dad that I put some in his freezer last time I hit the Mexican market.

Boy, IMO, this is not the place to look for sinus relief. Non native trees that explode with pollen, lack of rain to wash it away, wind and dust, 24/7 A/C, casino smoke. I mean, obviously people find ways to survive, but this place is no panacea for sinus problems!

Throw in global warming in your post and we have an environmental disaster that needs a state of emergency declared!
