Makes about as much sense as someone buying Radio Shack and trying to do something with that financial train wreck. Most dead things aren't pleasant when they are brought back to life.

The main problem with F&E is that Tesco didn't do their homework in terms of what American consumers want. The self checkout and self bagging concept fell flat, as did their product mix. They carried some domestic products, but not enough of them for you to do all of your shopping there. They also couldn't decide whether they were a British or American grocery chain. The end result was a weird hybrid of both that never resounded with shoppers. I liked their British products and wish that they had more of them to set them apart from other chains.

I stopped off at a Fresh & Easy for the first time this evening in Henderson. As a nightowl, I appreciate them being open 24/7 but the reality is I doubt I'll take advantage of that. Some of their prices were good, some were kind of on the high side.

I think their more realistic competition is Trader Joe's, not Whole Foods Market, but either of those two have better selection than Fresh & Easy, which seems to deliberately try to be spacious & airy by having lots of space in-between their shelves (meaning fewer shelves of merchandise).

The "Fresh to Go" 'food bar' was a huge let-down for me, though I was guilty of building my hopes up that it'd be like a Whole Foods Market food & salad bar -- not even close. A few pre-made sandwiches & wraps, pre-made salads & pastas, etc. -- no food bar where you get to make your own salad & stuff it into a box, or mix rice, mashed potatoes, & mac & cheese into a tub & then stir it all up before you eat it.

With so many large grocery stores around here being open 24/7 -- and many of them having 'healthy food' sections in them these days, plus enough TJ's & WFMs scattered about, I just can't see Fresh & Easy surviving.
