And Reno is really far away from Vegas. It was a pleasant city when I lived there. You might like it better than Vegas. You could always get your education there, and then move down here if you wanted.

I was a dental hygienist here in Vegas for 10 years and went to school here too. I went to CSN graduated in 2001, took 2 years of prerequisites and needed a 4.0 GPA to be accepted into the hygiene program.

Pros; good money (about $40-45 an hour)
Lots of jobs

Cons; teachers in school are very hard on you, I've heard they willingly fail students now, even half way through the program.
Hard to get into school
No medical insurance or 401K
No variety or upward mobility
( I recommend nursing)

I married and became a Realtor

Isn't the College in Reno different from the CSN college? So the above post wouldn't apply to me if I decided to go to the Truckee Meadows Community College. I would just need to find out if I could complete my prerequisites classes in another state and then complete the Dental Hygiene program in Nevada.

Hi there! As a Las Vegas resident I have asked this same question if dental hygiene is a good career.
Many people recommend nursing for the fact that you get benefits, a 401k, and have more growth opportunity.
However, I am a student at UNLV and getting into a nursing program is much harder than getting into a Dental Hygiene program. Because SO many people in the LV area want to become nurses.
Also dental hygiene is much easier than nursing, you sit and clean teeth, and don't deal with any life changing decisions.
I always see listings for dental hygiene here in Las Vegas but I hear many people say it's a bad over saturated field. So it's really up to you.
Between dental assisting and hygiene I would definitely choose hygiene for the simple fact that hygiene is at least an associates degree and assisting is just a certificate.
But what I've come to realize is no matter what you choose, there will be cons.

Do they publish their prices?

Do they charge more if you have insurance just cause they can bill higher to insurance?

I know I need a deep quadrant cleaning (had the last one about 10 years ago). Normally they run about $1200-$1500 for all 4 quadrants. With Alpha, it is costing me $400.

I think discount dental plans are the way to go, rather than insurance.

Wow, look at you flaming a dental hygiene career! I didn't realize you had to get a 4.0 GPA to get into the nursing program. dental hygiene is over saturated though, that part you got right.

So because Dental Hygiene is over saturated it wouldn't be a good idea to go into that field? What exactly do you mean by over saturated? I would be attending a community college preferably the Truckee Meadows Community College.

I'm not "flaming" anything. Whatever that means, lmao. Dental hygiene is a great career. I'm just stating facts. If you know anything about UNLVs nursing program you know many people with 4.0s don't even get in, you can look yourself the requirements of UNLVs nursing program to CSNs Dental Hygiene aren't even comparable.
Not saying anything is wrong with it, it's just facts. So have a seat, dang so defensive lol.
