I read an article in the Vegas Seven paper today about CCSD still struggling to attract teachers here in the valley. Is this a recent shortage or has it always been this way? I don't remember hearing about a teacher shortage 5 years ago and its hard to believe that all of a sudden the district is short 600 teachers.(currently short 175)

CCSD Leans on Teach for America to Help Solve Staffing Shortage | Vegas Seven

The Clark County School District has its issues, but staffing—or more
specifically the lack of it—may top the list. When the school year began in
August, CCSD was scrambling to fill more than 600 teaching spots. By the time
winter break hit, there were still hundreds of vacancies.

Sounds like the school district got rid of a lot of bad teachers. That's a good thing.

CCSD is at least 100 years old. I'd say that's how long we've had a teacher shortage in this dry, dusty, little desert outpost.

There has always been a teacher shortage in LV. The pay for teachers is pathetic compared to other states and the cost of living has not always been as low as it is now. The only reason that Reno doesn't have the same problem is that UNR and Sierra Nevada College churn out teachers like water every year. However, the pay in both districts is just awful, WCSD (done know about CCSD) does not recognize years taught in other districts, and the cost of dues and benefits for a teacher with a family is about 1/3 of gross salary.

I knew when I graduated in the 90's (and long before), that there would be no problem getting a job.
