However, it felt decidedly ordinary and didn't get my heart racing like the Italian cars.

The people that don't "get it" will also point out their $100 Timex outperforms a $10,000 Rolex.

Of course, while the ZR1 or GTR may be nice cars, they are not Italian exotics
I am not fan of Italian exotics, well I thought Lambo is part of the VW group, so it really has German roots now. The brute torque of an American V8 or Mopar V10 is the biggest rush to me. I also love american muscle.. funny how these days at the auto auctions, the 60's muscle cars are raking in more money than some of these exotics. Carol Shelby auctioned off his Cobra for 6 million recently. I would rather be seen in a 1970 Chevelle SS 454 LS6 Convertable than a ferrari or lambo. I bet I would turn a lot more heads too.

There is clearly a distinction between regular exotic sports cars and collectible vintage cars. Collectable cars, like a $5.5MM Shelby Cobra or $9.25MM 1962 Ferrari, always command a hefty premium. Most cars sold at those levels are not driven often and are a part of a collection.

Owning an exotic shouldn't be about turning heads. However, the lime green Lambos seem to turn heads more than most. Even though Lamborghini is now owned by Audi AG, the company is still 100% independent and their roots have not changed. Ferrari and Maserati are both owned by Fiat SpA but both maintain seperate identities and roots. Ownership doesn't mean much in terms of history. If I purchased an existing taco stand in Mexico, it wouldn't automatically turn it into American food.

I, obviously, perfer Italian exotics. Driving one is very rewarding. Lots of owners start out with American or German sports cars before graduating to exotics.

Of course, driving a vintage car like a 1970 Chevelle is just a whole different game all together

I actually own a 1970 Chevelle SS, but its not a convertable. I put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this car and its also fun to take it out to the drag strip once in a while. Muscle car guys and exotic car guys are a different breed. I'm more of a gear head and would rather work on the car than bring it to the dealer. I've owned an M3 and some other euro sports cars, but there is really nothing like a Detroit built muscle car. I remember when Chip foose drove his custom ford hot rod to an awards show and charlie sheen asked him "where can I get one of those". Chip said "you can't, its a one off". That to me is priceless. Even if I had the money, I wouldn't buy an Italian exotic, I would rather have something more custom.

I think we can agree on this one Exotic owners are generally different than muscle car guys. Just don't write off exotics until you have owned one. BMWs and Porsches will seem very ordinary after owning a modern italian sports car

I don't have a desire to own an Italian Exotic.. I think even though they are cool, they don't that have the "one off" out of the ordinary feeling like a custom classic car has. I just like the lines of the 50 & 60's era american cars and its all about preference. The roar of a big block chevy with long tube headers and the smell of burning rubber when you do that classic burn out. I can tell you though when I drive my Chevelle down the LV strip, its a blast to see everyone wanting to take a picture of it and all the people giving me the thumbs up. BTW, have you ever been to Hot August Night in Reno?

Fair enough Not all cars are for all people. Some like classic muscle cars, some like major manufacturer sports cars, and others like exotics (typically different demographics for each category). Of course, most people don't care to own any specialty cars at all.

I've been to Reno a number of times but just in the winter.

If you want to see the best Classic Cars on the west coast, Hot August Nights is a fun time. There are car shows at almost every large casino and all along Virginia street.

Well, since the Italian exotic and classic muscle car contigent are present, I may as well throw my hat in the ring. German GT's, particularly BMW's, are my choice. I do love Italian exotics as well as American muscle, but something about German engineering just does it for me. Perhaps it is because most German cars are engineered with the Autobahn in mind. Plus, BMW always seems to do more with less, i.e. the E46 M3 CSL. I am actually registered for the Susan G. Komen Ultimate Drive at Desert BMW of Las Vegas. I will be driving the E92 M3 *drool* at 12:30PM, and the Alpina B7 at 11:30AM on Monday, May 19th.
