Hi all-

2 questions please for those who work as a front desk hotel/resort agent...

1) When you receive a $20 trick "tip", is that split amongst other agents---or do you get to keep it yourself?

2) How many times per shift do you receive a $20 trick "tip"?

Thanks in advance

Just for the hell of it, I tried the "$20 trick" at The Hotel (now the Delano) when my wife and I were checking in for a stay. The female desk clerk behind the counter said "I'll see what I can do" as we headed for our room (a standard suite). As we were entering our room we could hear the phone ringing - it was the desk clerk. She told us not to unpack and that she was sending up a staffer with a new room key card. We ended up in the top corner Strip suite with a bathroom as big as a suite itself - it even had plasma screens, a steam room and a hot tub. We liked it so much we kept the room for a week. Before we left I found the same desk clerk and tipped her well.

The above relates the one and only time I've tried the $20 trick. Maybe we got lucky. Maybe the desk clerk would have upgraded us anyway - who really knows?

Bill

I believe you. But that isn't the outcome I was expecting. I'd love to hear more first-hand experiences paying the front desk to give pricey upgrades away for pennies on the dollar.

If I owned the hotel, I'd fire anyone who did this. It's not their place to decide who gets upgraded to the better rooms. I would have my own metrics for that.

But I'm glad it worked out for you -- it's kind of cool, when you think about it.

^ This. I'm amazed that $20.00 would get you anywhere. I'd be shocked if there was nothing in the Employee Handbook stating that it's against company policy to accept gratuity in exchange for an upgrade. At that point as Scoop said you're giving away valuable upgrades for pennies on the dollar - dollars going directly to the employee not the casino.

Considering how long it can take to secure a front desk position at a casino on the strip I'm surprised these people would be willing to risk their job for $20.

Than again, you never know.

i had a comped room at cosmo (crappiest one) for 2 nights, got upgraded to a wrap around terrace - that was probably the best $20 upgrade i've gotten

at trump, i got a higher floor

at PH, I got an upgraded room that overlooked the strip

some hotels don't do it (even though they may have in the past)... check the 20dollartrick website

My wife always does the "local ID trick". Last time we stayed at Red Rock Casino we booked online but when we arrived at the front desk, she showed her Nevada license and we got an instant upgrade.

Don't know if this is SOP.

Default I tried it...

I successfully got an upgrade at Caesars with the $20 trick, from cheapest possible rate to a nicer room overlooking the pools. This was 4 years ago or so.
