If the thought of one day having a surprise skylight, and surprise pool, Florida is the place for you.

I lived there 7 years. I prefer it here.
We can get some pretty humid days here in NY during the Summer too. Is there really anyone that likes humid weather?

"Surprise skylight" - caused by hail from the t-storms?
"Surprise pool" - I guess you're referring to Florida sinkholes. One of those in the TB area last year did make the tv news up this way. Didn't have that problem when I lived in central FL, but maybe I was just lucky.

All of the things you mentioned are the things that are holding me back from going back to FL. I love the greenery there, the beaches, the water, the overall look of the area. But, then there are all of the bugs, more t-storms, more humidity, hurricanes and sinkholes.

Can I ask you how you ended up in Vegas after leaving FL? Did you or your spouse get a job transfer, or did you just get fed up with FL and want to try a drier climate? Any regrets about relocating to Vegas?

EA and Raiderman have it down. Henderson has all you need and safer than downtown Vegas by far. The reason I like Reno is the more of a 4 season weather pattern, but in an moderate predictable manner unlike (Boston and NY this year), and prettier scenery, plus less populations attributable to Vegas and nearby communities. Just another 2 cents.lol. Jim

I came back for some quality time with my family.
I figured if I loved it I'd stay awhile but being here for the past 6 months made me remember why I left in the first place over a decade ago.

While I love my family the city isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Dirty, over crowded, homeless are everywhere, over priced, small apartment for insane rent and the cold weather.

It isn't all bad... There are great things about NYC too. Manhattan can be magical at times.
But overall I don't feel it's worth the price of admission.

In Vegas I had a better quality of life. the cost of living was extremely inexpensive compared to NYC... It's more laid back, better weather, nicer landscape. I loved Los Angeles too... which is only a 4 hour drive from Vegas.

I suggest visiting both cities for a refresher. See which one gets you more charged up.
That might be what decides it for you.

Check out the Henderson area. It's 10 min from the strip, it's nice and has safe very affordable gated communities. One bedrooms are around $850, you get the usual pool and gym amenities.
Also avoid the strip. it's nothing but tourists and is over priced, Locals hang out downtown.

I wish you the best where ever you end up.
Good luck.

I am much more familiar with Eastern cities than Western, as I haven't been to many places in the Western US. Perhaps if I relocated to Vegas I could use it as a jumping off point to explore other areas out that way.

I'm a little amused by that comment. Is the thinking by landlords that I might blow through all of the money at the casinos in a few weeks and not have money to pay the rent? I don't see any way that I could lose that much money in a month, unless some hacker or identity thief emptied my bank accounts. I'm very conservative when it comes to spending money. But, I will definitely make some phone calls to apartments I am interested in before moving anywhere to see if this will be a problem.
It would not be the first time that has happened. Landlords don't know you from "Joe Professional Poker Player" who goes on a bad run.

I spent 2 years in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area before I bought a house and moved to Las Vegas about 18 months ago. If you love water and the beach culture the Tampa area is great. If you want to live anywhere near that water you will pay through the nose. The winters are beautiful and comfortable there but the summers are really uncomfortable. There are thunderstorms almost every afternoon that make it so humid you can barely breathe. Walking from your car to your apartment will have you drenched in sweat. You really won't understand how bad humidity can get until you spend some time there. You also won't believe how big cockroaches can get.

If you are spending any time in Tampa proper the traffic is horrendous. They didn't allow enough space for future development when building the interstate so it's a parking lot for a couple hours a day. If you aren't in the downtown areas around rush hours you can avoid the worst of it. The economy might be a little better in FL than NV but both states are very low wages compared to the rest of the country. There's lots of people moving to both places for sunshine and lack of snow so wages get pushed down.

Despite the negatives there are some things I miss about FL. The greenery is beautiful, and I miss seeing the water. I had an apartment near the water that had some really nice scenery nearby and all the tourist attractions of the beach nearby as well. The winter weather in Tampa is nicer than in Las Vegas. I miss the Publix grocery stores, which are way better than anything I've found in Las Vegas.

I won't go into any of the specific benefits of Las Vegas since lots of other people are covering those. If you have any specific questions I can certainly try to answer them.

My job is transferring me from PA to LV... however, I work for a Casino in PA and being transferred to another casino in LV.

Obviously there's more out there then just Casino's but do what you can to solidify something before you move if you can. My wife works for All-State Insurance and has already received multiple offers from various insurance companies... so we've been lucky.

Good luck with your decision...
