A few of you might remember that I post here occasionally. Currently in SoCal, but prefer to ignore our boards and enjoy LV's boards. Anyways, I have spent the last year debating and applying for School Psychologist internships. I was pretty excited the other day when I got an offer from CCSD. I've had a bunch of offers, but CCSD is good internship (despite how some people might feel about the district). For those interested, here's a list of cities which Las Vegas beat out:

Denver
Dallas
Houston
Minneapolis
Portland
Chicago
All of Northern California
Anchorage

Pretty excited to be in Vegas in a few months!!!

Welcome to Vegas.

If those were my choices I would take Vegas too! And I've lived in Texas and Minnesota and spent a lot of time in Chicago. I've only visited the other choices.

Congratulations on your internship!

I'm interested what clinched it between LV, Dallas and Portland as they all have similar rents/RE sales prices.

Well despite what many people on here believe, the schools had a huge influence on my decision. In the world of school psychology/special education, CCSD is pretty progressive. Schools in Texas are highly ranked which is what most people focus on, but I'm more interested in the quality of the staff that are trying to help students. Not saying that Portland/Dallas don't have great educators, but CCSD was very impressive.

I chose LV over Portland because of weather. I grew up in Texas where we had months long stretches of 100+ degree heat with extreme humidity. Obviously the sun can be brutal in LV, but I like the dry heat. Beyond that, family helped sway me to LV over Portland. My wife has a bunch of cousins in Henderson, and we have already found several apartments in their area within our budget. Portland had a lot of apartments that would have been in our budget, but they were usually full.

I really enjoy being in the Vegas area. I've lived in SoCal for nearly four years, but I refused to go to LV until about a year ago. I don't gamble so my cousins convinced me by saying they would take me to a gun show. I came in for the show, and we toured around. I went to the strip, Fremont, etc. I was convinced pretty quickly. The strip has the reputation for being a crazy place where you can party all night (which you can). But, we don't have to go down there and go crazy. The last time I was out there we went to the area near the High Roller, and just enjoyed a laid back night. Of course, people were going crazy all around us, but that didn't effect our night. Then, at the end of the night, we walked back to our cars (totally sober) and drove back to Henderson, where you would never guess was only 30 minutes away from one of the craziest areas in the country.

Anyways, the Vegas area is pretty awesome. My only real concern at this point is the quality of craft beer in the area. Maybe I could get some info from yall!?

Craft beer is OK in Las Vegas. Not great. But OK.

There just aren't enough people who are really into craft beer to support that industry properly. Bangers (downtown next to the Heart Attack Grill) and Big Dog's are my two favorite brewpubs. Bangers particularly because there isn't any video poker, and that means there aren't any video poker players (who cannot play video poker without a lit cigarette dangling from their mouth, it seems). At Big Dog's, patrons who don't want to leave smelling like an ashtray need to sit in the restaurant, or right next to the restaurant in their little "holding area" between the video-poker bar and the restaurant.

If you go to the craft beer events, you see the same 500 people every time. Most people are happy with their macro brews -- and Nevada Beverage is happy to oblige them.

We're close enough to Colorado and California to get all the West Coast crafts. And some bars have a great selection -- Aces and Ales comes immediately to mind. (But it's a smoke filled video poker joint.) There's also the two Yard House locations that I'm quite fond of, and of course Hofbrauhaus. Hofbrauhaus is no value, but it's cheaper than airfare to Munich.

We also have Total Wine, which means you can buy just about any beer you'd like and serve it at home. (This is my solution because I will not drive drunk, or drive buzzed for that matter. And so many of the local bars are smoke-filled video poker joints. If I thought I could turn a profit with a proper pub in Las Vegas, I would open one immediately. I'm of the mind that people here wouldn't know a decent pub if it whacked them over the head with a real, cellared, hand-pulled pint of bitter.)

Give Rebel Republic on Sahara a try. 52 crafts on tap. Plus, the bartender was able to acquire the Holy Grail of IPAs for me.. Pliny the Elder. Rebel Republic, Barley's, and Sin City Brewing are my 3 "go-tos" in town for good beer.

Triple 7 at Main Street Station too. I also like Big Dog's.

There isn't much that's NOT available here!
