Funny, I'll be in town the week before, and paying $69/night at Monte Carlo.

They definitely take local events into account when pricing rooms.

The week after when Rock in Rio begins rates are back down. Even the Westgate, walking distance to the festival grounds is going for $50. Just goes to show not about events, it's about the kind of patrons they bring in. Nothing beats the boxing crowd.

Are there any other big events besides New Years that room rates spike this much?

None that I can recall. Primm is asking $225 and El Cortez wants $489 for Fri,Sat that weekend.

225 for Primm? Holy Moley!

You couldn't pay me 225 to stay in Primm. As far as I'm concerned, it's the most loathsome place in Nevada.

Hope the fight is great and everyone had a good time. I'll treat it like New Years and stay home.

a friend booked a room on the strip (I think Ballys) for well under $100 for that weekend but that was way before they announced the fight as a go.

It is really interesting the draw of Vegas. I think that most of the people coming to Vegas for the fight won't be going to the actual fight. So, people will be paying ridiculous prices for rooms just so they can be in Vegas while the fight is happening?

Pretty much, about 16,000 seats in the arena and 325,000 vistors expected so you do the math. About 90% will be Manny fans, will be like a Filipino convention.
