Hello I'm a 22 yr old black male, prior military, I spent 4 years in the Navy.

I got out last year and decided to move to Miami where I currently reside.
My brother moved there in 2013 from Detroit (My hometown as well) and he's loving it. He's pretty much trying to get me to join him out there. I currently pay about $1000 for rent here in Miami. I make around 17.50 an hourly. My military skills don't really translate to the civilian world too well.

I love Miami. I enjoy this multicultural tropical region but I do not have any family/true friends down here yet. In Vegas I have my half-brother and his side of the family.

He has told me a lot about the city in his one year there. But he's older than me he's 28 and I'm 22 so I just want to know if Vegas is the right spot for a 22yr old male as far as living there. Visiting I'm sure it's awesome. Like Miami feels like a young persons paradise, beaches, exotic homes, clothes, cars, women, nightlife, you name it Miami has it.

But there are some ongoing complications with my job in which I may be terminated so I don't want to be homeless. I figured I'd spend my gas drive out to LV. Room with my brother until I can find a job with stable income.

How does this sound?

I know the cost of living is a little less than here. I see it just looking at some of the rental prices over there. My brother has told me the good and bad areas so I'm good there. Just trying to decide if I should make such a drastic leap.

I forgot to mention I'm medically retired from the Navy. So I would want to live somewhat close to the Las Vegas VA hospital like a 10-15 min drive for my appointments.

Weekly rentals are 800 a month~ everything included if you do want your own place.
Work can be tough to get.

If you have some money saved up and can live with your brother free of charge (or nearly so) and are employable I say, yes go for it. You'll have to look at finding work as a full time job and don't be tempted to live in "the fast lane" of Las Vegas night life. Look at jobs listed at indeed.com and stay away from jobs listed on Craigslist. You didn't say what type of work you have now or what your looking for, but mention being terminated. No employer likes to hire someone who's been terminated, so that is a big obstacle to overcome. Don't be afraid to find any type of employment. It's easier to find a job if you have a job. Good luck.

If you love Miami, then stay there.

Vegas is a good city, but not Miami by a long shot. People come and go in Vegas. Casinos get annoying very quickly as well. Also, there are more job opportunities in Miami, likely. Unless, you want to work in a casino, which is something I strongly don't recommend.

also, the women in southern NV are flakes for the most part.

with all that being said, southern NV is probably a 10 ten spot in the USA. Miami, however, is a top 5.

If you want it all, move to LA.

Good luck!

It sounds like you have a viable plan and some family help. I don't see why Las Vegas wouldn't be good for a 22 year old. Come try it out for awhile and see from there.

I moved out to Vegas knowing only 1 person, who isn't family. Having family around is helpful and more comfortable, so you're ahead of the game on that.
I'm not sure what your marketable job skills are, but start your job research now, put your resume together and utilize any contacts you have and send it to them.

I've been to Miami, never lived there. Vegas is definitely it's own animal. I'm actually from Michigan, and I lived in Georgia for quite a few years before moving to Vegas late last year. I've listened to a lot of people give their opinions about Vegas, from people who were born and raised all the way to new transplants like me.

Cost of living is comfortable. There's amazing nightlife. The job economy seems good enough to me (depending on your career). But here's what I recommend you keep in mind...
Vegas is a party town. The influx and outflux of visitors is non-stop. As a local, you will avoid the strip at all costs. Unless you have to work in it, which many people do. But you don't spend your free-time on the strip. That's for tourists. You find your "spots" with time. As a party town, it's easy to lose yourself in the lifestyle. Being a stubborn, stingy person, I don't forsee myself heading down sh*t's creek, but I've been told plenty of stories of people being chewed up and spit out around here. So if you have a problem with gambling, drugs, alcohol, etc...I would tell you to think twice. Because all of that is rampant around here.
Be careful of the company you keep. I've made new friends based on recommendation only. I've heard this warning from all sides. The dating pool kinda sucks too. You just have to be extra-smart about things.

However, minus the 3-4 summer months of blazing h*ll, the weather here is quite beautiful. Dry (yes it will effect you, you're used to that Miami humidity and ocean breeze) and sunny. There's lots of hiking, and you're within a reasonable driving distance of other states like Utah, Arizona and California. If you like off-roading vehicles there are plenty of people into that. Lots of concerts, conventions, restaurants and pretty much anything else. Nothing wrong with trying it out!
