Since there are so few pupfish in the world, I think my wife and I have now seen a significant percentage of the total pupfish population.

We took a lap around Mt. Charleston this weekend (and made barbecue). With the mild weather, it's a great time to head to the two wineries in Pahrump -- free tastings, surprisingly solid wine (particularly our home-grown zin and petite sirah) -- and the bottles are easy on the wallet.

There's no reason not to see both wineries, seeing as they're only a few miles from each other. But of the two, I prefer Sanders. It's a small family operation.

Then it was off to Ash Meadows to see the pupfish

And then finally we headed to Crystal, NV -- just for yuks. One brothel is boarded up "renovation." One is quite working. And then there's Kathy's saloon. I wish Kathy had a couple craft beers for sale. But as middle-of-nowhere honkytonks go, this is a pretty good one.

I looked. Couldn't find the pupfish.

I didn't know there were two wineries in Pahrump now. Does the other one have a restaurant too?

The other winery was founded by the family that started Pahrump Valley Winery -- so their wines are quite similar. No, no restaurant.

The Pupfish are pretty small so you need to look closely for them. We have Chubs in our Utah desert - and they are also minnow-sized. But, the Mojave Pupfish is much more unique and endangered. One fed publication calls them the "rarest fish in the world."

The total world-wide population numbers in the hundreds. We saw most of 'em. But it's impossible to see the population at Devil's hole, unless you're an ichthyologist with reason to go there. Kathy at Crystal said people were throwing car batteries into the hole. So they fenced it off to protect the couple hundred pupfish living there.

I thought that was the snail darter. Or was that 30 years ago?

The Snail Darter was indeed fought over fiercely - but in the area the TVA had jurisdiction over. Nevada and Utah have seen the Pupfish and the Chub protection cases work their way through the courts for many years.
