There's a more to it that logging in when you want, and taking rides when you want. You get deactivated (email from the company that you are no longer able to log in to the app / you're fired) when your rating falls too low, when you fail to take calls, and if you don't work enough days of the week, month, etc. Just like the taxi cab companies here - uber = high turnover rates if you don't cut the mustard.

I don't know how things will work out there, when they get around to writing the rules, but here in Newyorkland you can't just sign up and drive. You need to get a TLC (taxi) license. And what are the insurance requirements? I would be surprised if something like that isn't going to be imposed out there. How many hoops does someone have to jump through before casual "sharing" is considered a real business? You're not going to do this casually on your ride into work. The added insurance cost alone would probably cost more than you'd make,

Uber is the very definition of Win-Win. The driver gets a few bucks. The passengers get where they want to go. It is nothing more than hitchhiking with a paper trail. That's why society has latched onto it at a fundamental level -- it makes sense.

We're going to see a lot more of this. Companies selling empty seats on their company jets*, neighborhood garden-tool communism and similar. Food co-ops are already going nuts. They have always been with us, but they became totally mainstream in the last five years.

* It amounts to unused bandwidth. We're going to fix this simply because it's inefficient.

Just for yuks I signed up for Uber. (My wife drives a four-door sedan.)

It took 15 minutes to be approved. Let me repeat. 15 minutes.

I don't doubt you can sign up for the app. Would it be legal to actually take fares. Probably not.

Ignoring that issue, let's say you got racked up on one if these trips and your fare got hurt. Your insurance finds out the injured was an Uber passenger. Since you don't have a commercial insurance policy, they deny any resulting claims. Your on your own. You know all that asset value you've been assiduously building up? Gone.

I'm telling you, it took a couple minutes to pass the background. And a couple more to have my license and insurance card accepted. I have to take a picture of my wife's car. But that's the absolute last hurdle. Took about 15 minutes.

Uber doesn't care. I'm sure there's language in their sign up agreement with there customers that indemnifies them and transfers liability to the drivers.

The self-anointed high priest of the win-win sharing economy doesn't share a car with his wife?

That rhetoric is for others. Sounds to me like he suffers from severe capital envy.

I drove up about 2 feet (heavy traffic) and another couple started heading toward my car, again I said "I'm not über" and was again greeted with a disappointed look.

Now either both couples where drunk, or didn't pay mind to the uber app of what the car would look like.

Strange.

You should have used an Arnold Schwarzenegger accent. "It's not an über!"
