I enjoy amateur fossil hunting but find that the majority of promising areas around Vegas are all BLM and off limits. Anyone know of fossil beds within an hour's drive of the NW valley?

There are trilobites (really small ones) behind Frenchman's mountain. The location is easily googled. Other than that, no idea.

Well, we do have three or four Sun Cities around here loaded with fossils

But unless something has changed in government regulations, the reason we love Nevada is because 87% is in BLM hands, meaning you are never fenced out. Now, if it's a wilderness area, like nearly all the Spring Mountain Range, you can take only pictures, leave only footprints.

I have seen fossils at over 10,000 feet in the local mountains, and in all kinds of desert locations, just never made note of where I was at the time. You might look around the back roads in the El Dorado Canyon area, but be careful not to encroach on anyone's mining claim. You'll need four wheel drive, or at least a high clearance vehicle, for almost any fossil area too. And poke around with a stick before you reach with your hands. Them buzzworms are really good at camouflage.

By the way, DynImage and I are two of the best looking fossils on this site. Google rock hounds, or fossil sites in Nevada, etc.

Fossil Collecting in Southern Nevada

Philosophy on fossil collecting

My thoughts are, it's OK to go looking for interesting things in the desert, but leave them where you find them, undisturbed, for the next guy to see too.
