Looking for good swimming places not pools around here. I'm told lake mead isn't good. Just would like to drive to a lake and take my boys to swim and not worry about some bacteria. Maybe, make a day trip out of it. Thank you to anyone responding.

Harrah's and the AVI in Laughlin both have private "beaches" on the Colorado. They get crowded, though.

But if you're making a day trip, I would head to the beach in California.

I would think Lake Mojave would work. Just skip any place with algae. It is actually pretty rare. Same thing on Lake Mead. Check Trip Adviser - they had a thread on Lake Mojave swimming a while ago.

Don't get carried away with the southern CA beaches. They are quite cold until September. There are workable places like Alamitos Bay...but you almost need local knowledge. If the kids are into surfing and have wet suits the CA beaches are fine.

One fun place for a couple of days or a weekend is Avalon on Catalina...but it is not a day trip. Water is pretty warm there.

It's not necessarily swimming but you can drive 2 hours north to St. George and go play in the Virgin River. Depending on their ages they may love to try skim boarding. Do a youtube search for Virgin River Classic to get an idea.
