HI, my wife and I have been here one month. We live in Henderson and love it so far. My question concerns home heating bills. We received a 14 day bill for our gas ( cooking, dryer, etc.) and it as $37. So, is it going to cost me about $75 a month in the summer for gas?? We expect a couple hundred dollars a month for our electricity in the summer but I hope the cost of gas is lower. Can someone tell me a typical gas bill in the summer> We have a one story 1560 ft home... brand new. Thanks!!

Sounds like don't understand your bill. There's no way you used that much gas, unless you left an outdoor bbq or pool heater running. There are probably some one-time fees on there, like a fee to establish service, or you're on an equal payment program.

Our home is about 600 sqft larger than yours, and we are predominately gas (heat, hot water, oven, dryer, etc). We are also in Henderson, although our house is 20 years old. Here's our average by month over the past 2 years (these are bill dates, so it's for the previous month):

Avg. June - $39
Avg. July - $33
Avg. Aug - $21
Avg. Sept - $20
Avg. Oct - $21
Avg. Nov - $53
Avg. Dec - $110
Avg. Jan - $92
Avg. Feb - $84
Avg. Mar - $54
Avg. Apr - $28
Avg. May - $24

It's summer time, there's no way you are using that much gas unless you have a leak somewhere. Maybe the initial bill is high because you have to pay for connecting the service?

Default our gas bill

Thanks to all who responded. A few of you were right.. there was a $26 one time charge on our first bill. Our actual bill was about $11 for actual gas usage for 14 days. We were sooo happy that our first electric bill for this hottest ever June month in las vegas history was only $160. Not bad considering how hot it was. Last question please.... what should our water bill be if we use about 4000 gallons a month? Thanks sooo much again to all of you wonderful people. Here is how I can help all of you...... I'm fantastic at picking NFL games against the spread. LOL I wish!!!

Water is billed at about $1.50 per $1000 gallons. Bear in mind that you're also paying for sewer, and that is about equal to water. If you're using 4,000 gallons, figure about $50/mo.

I find my water/sewer bill about 1/2 of what it was back in NYS I figured I would have been paying more here in the desert but not so. Unless you have a pool or something like that or big lawns the charges for water is reasonable compared to many other areas in the country which have water coming out of their ears. Nevada is the leader in water conservation in the SW something to crow about
