The truth as I have said Las Vegas isn't a normal city, far from it and people should be prepared for what they are getting themselves into if they plan on moving here. But please there is no need to attack others. It's one thing if you disagree or attack others based on facts another thing when you are trying to point out something you have no clue on. You and I have no knowledge of why people stay here if they don't like it...some may be unable to afford to move or have other reasons. Again we don't know.
Actually there is no "pro" push on LV. It is a rather straight up southwestern city with the strip and Nellis for added value. and that is very nice added value.

Its school system is poor which is par for any large US school system. But within that poor system there are quite good schools.

It is both aided and hurt by its climate. Some place between 1 in 5 and 1 in 10 of the people who move here will leave over the heat. Others, like me, will never move anywhere the sun does not shine 300 days a year. I spent almost 20 years in the southern CA ocean plane. I much prefer the Vegas climate. I spent decades in the east and Midwest. I much prefer LV.

t is not substantially different that suburban CA or Phoenix or Tucson. Not better not worse.

And it is an exceptionally nice place on the eye. The surrounding mountains provide exceptional views. And for those who wish infinite territory to explore.

So those people are living in their vacation wonderland.

Since I'm not interested in gambling, smoking, clubbing and doing drugs, nor am I interested in hanging out with people who enjoy these things, I find the social scene not just lacking but pathetic.

Back home, I used to be out nearly every day. Here, what's the point? I have no desire to watch stage-one and stage-two addicts going through their daily addiction routines.

So I've made travel my touchstone. The less time I spend in this city, the better. People don't even know when I'm gone because I post a few throw-away comments here and on Facebook from where ever I happen to be. Last week it was Mexico. Next week, who knows? Maybe I'll catch a break and get a few days off in a row again and go somewhere.

That's basically all I live for until leaving this town becomes the mature, responsible choice. I could sell everything and move anywhere I want tomorrow. But I'd be shirking my responsibilities if I did.

EDIT -- I neglected to mention a third group that loves, loves, loves it here: Whackjobs. Baked in the sun whackjobs. Religious whackjobs. Conspiracy theory whackjobs. And just run-of-the-mill whackadoodles. Las Vegas is like a magnet for them.
This is the sort of evil diatribe that need rebutting.

Not a lick of real truth...just hate. And lies.

this place has made me a homebody. I think the heat keeps people in more than anything. back home I still went out in the cold. So I don't understand the bragging of LV weather. Pool season doesn't even start until april/may.

I find the lack of empathy displayed on both sides of this issue to be painful. There's just no need to portray a Las Vegas supporter or a Las Vegas detractor as sick or twisted. Where one chooses to live is a personal preference. It does not make any of us better than others because we do, or don't, want to live here.

Browsing city data for a few years now, I can comfortably say that negativity or foaming at the mouth anger are the attitudes that tend to drive the most discussion on here. Like anywhere else on the Internet.

People have a right to be miserable wherever they live. But like a vegan or someone who does crossfit, just be prepared for them to tell you about it OVER AND OVER, even if you didn't ask.

So what's wrong with being a "homebody"? (no, I didn't say home-boy...LOL) If it floats your boat, and it doesn't hurt anyone else, I say go for whatever makes you happy.

From what I can see, there is quite a bit of outdoor recreation too....there's a big lake for the waterdogs, and a big desert for those who enjoy awesome adventure, and some of the most majestic vistas you'll ever see. Close to some very awesome national parks. And it's got a great airport that is a hub for just about anywhere you want to go, with some very favorable airfares to go along with it.

So you can stay home, travel the world, and play til you can't stand it any more. And you can even go bore yourself to death playing in the casinos.

Yes, it sounds like LV is just hades on earth. (but still way better than the infected hemorrhoids of the earth known as california with all the enviro whacko's and tax and spend nanny staters!)

I beg to differ. My children and their Grandparents would LOVE to take them to these sorts of places, if they existed. But they don't exist, and it doesn't look like any of these places are on the radar, for the city to build.

We've got video poker in the supermarkets (and we would have them in elementary schools if we could, along with free cigarette machines to hook 'em young). Why on Earth do we need a decent zoo? Or professional sports? Or a downtown that's not wall-to-wall strip clubs and strip club advertisements?

Picky, picky, picky. Next you'll want libraries that are open normal hours.

Actually, I think the most vocal anti-vegas poster really takes that position to provide the devils advocate position. Seems like "begas been berry berry good to him", so how could you hate it as much he would want you to think?

Its weird you ask that, because although back home wasn't a fun filled wonderland, we were never in the house this much. I also think it stems from everything in Vegas being so far, and the heat during the summer months make you want to stay inside. then when the heat dies down, you just don't care to do anything. When I said there is nothing to do here, I was speaking on how a lot of locals hype up the social scene here because its Vegas, when really, outside of being a tourist, there isn't one.
Try living in California.. Any of the major cities.. Things are far away... And if you came from DC you should be able to tolerate the heat...

You have to make an effort to do things.. I have been to DC plenty of times and have NEVER considered it a place I would want to live.... Heck why not just drive around the city and find things to do... Shoot whenever we are in Vegas we just like to people watch.. Grab an outside table somewhere and just watch the parade....

Shark reef aquarium is a great place to just sit and watch sea creatures... go to one of the hotels and use the pool... etc, etc....
