“They cater to the Mexican community here” - My wife is Hispanic and I just asked her if she feels catered to and she replied “no, now in California we were catered to” Straight from a Hispanic’s mouth.

“There is really nothing to do but gamble, see shows if anything good is out, party, swim if youre lucky to have a pool, or walk the strip or Fremont street” – Really, that’s all there is to do here? Remember, these are truths.

“Drivers are retarted. You are guaranteed a fender bender at most within your first year living here” – I don’t believe the mentally challenged are allowed to drive here. Also, I’ve lived here three years and no accidents so that’s not much of a guarantee the OP has going there. No accidents for the Hispanic wife either. By-the-way, notice the OP misspelled retarded, just saying . . .

Unless you like burgers and Mexican food, cook at home – Really? Scoop where do you work, In-N-Out or Taco Bell?

“Unless you have family or friends already, you will be lonely” – We moved here three years ago not knowing a soul and just today I was complaining because we’re so busy socially that between now and mid September we have one available weekend date to schedule dinner with a neighbor. At this point I’d welcome not having anything to do and being lonely! Oh, and the neighbor took us up on the date so we are booked through mid September now.

Sure I parsed the OP’s message to make my point and I do agree with the OP that we need to do better with our education system and if you move here without a job it’s going to be difficult, hell if you move almost any place without a job it could be difficult, not impossible but difficult. However, don’t try and pass off your other comments as truths because they’re not, they’re your opinion and experience. Next time title your post, “my experience” because that’s exactly what it is, your experience, it’s not mine and obviously it’s not others either. My experience has been pretty kick-ass and I’m not even a gambler, drug addict, whack-job (at least I don’t think I am) or otherwise goofy or damaged, imagine what a good time I’d be having if I was!

I think the good news is I’m not sure how much credit someone reading the original post will give truths coming from someone who admits they were tricked into moving someplace – “I feel I was one of those people who let the illusion of vacationing here trick me into wanting to move here.”

To quote Joe Dirt, “life’s a garden, dig it”
First I think the use of the word "retarded" should be stopped. One point of the OP that I didn't like was the use of this word but I understood the point he was trying to make so as an adult I overlooked the use of the word. Second now to say that "I don't believe the mentally challenged are allowed to drive here" is a comment I can't overlook. This comment is ridiculous and disrespectful to all people. I think you should really be careful how you say things about a group of people who do drive and do add their value to this town.

How about mild and dry all year long? Why not choose THAT? No matter what climate floats your boat, it exists somewhere. My idea of perfect is "highs in the low 80s and lows in the mid 60s with a 20% chance of rain." EVERY SINGLE DAY OF THE YEAR.

I've found quite a few places that fill the bill. And a few of them are in America -- so I don't need to worry about visa concerns.
ScoopLV I agree. Since Las Vegas is in the middle of the desert people try to compare one extreme to another. Sorry but the weather back East in many places is more moderate than in Las Vegas. As ScoopLV pointed out there are also plenty of areas in the US that have much more moderate climate than Las Vegas...we are in the middle of hell during the summer you can't compare that to many places. You may comment about the humidity back East but most of those cities have something that we don't...much more rain, rivers, lakes, water, natural trees for shade and so on. Go outside of your house and tell me when you see a natural tree that was hand planted that provides shade...I'll be waiting.

Las Vegas is about gambling, period. This city would not exist without it. As gambling profits continue to decrease in Las Vegas people fail to realize that will cause a domino effect. More unemployed, less revenue for the state and so on. So it will get worse.

We all love paying no income tax but at the same time we have the worst school system in the US...sorry but I would gladly pay income tax to make the school system better. We fail to realize that those large numbers of high school drop outs are residents of this city, we can either educate them or welcome (most) of them to the unemployment/welfare line. One thing Atlantic City found out the hard way is if you fail to reinvest in the city surrounding your casinos it will come back to bite you. So to the people that say the school system doesn't matter to you because you don't have kids you should think again. Show me another school system of similar size with that high of a drop out rate and show me a school system that will be starting the school year 700 teachers short.

You add in the currently high unemployment rate, high gas prices, major drought, the still high foreclosure rate and 100+ temperatures during summer I'm not sure how much closer to hell you can get. Some of you may love the atmosphere of Las Vegas, good for you...but it will not last. Things will continue to decline in Las Vegas over the next several years.

I have poor credit due to medical bills... We have 5 cars 3 2014s a 2007 element and a 2002 insight.. Full coverage except for 2002 insight... Under 250 per month to insure. 100/300/100. The element is surprisingly expensive to insure.

We have a 2000 or 2001 reliable, small, economical car. When we moved here we had full coverage for both of us and it was around $90 a month. Then this year we switched to liability and it's $33 a month. I don't think we paid more than $25 for tags. Clean driving records and good credit. No accidents in our first year here either.

I'd only like Vegas if I was rich and only lived there for one month during the winter.

Not going to take the PC bait, especially since I took OP's offensive to some term and used a common PC term instead. I think your comprehension is a bit off here.

Back to the topic, I applaud the fact that are taking action on your dislike of this city and doing it in short order rather than wasting precious time/life It's not for everyone, no city is, I've been in your shoes twice (actually to the level you dislike Vegas only once) and moving and putting these locations in the rear view mirror were great decisions. Good luck wherever your ultimate ends up being.

My wife and I travel to a lot of different countries on holiday. Beautiful Greek and Spanish islands...... Cyprus with gorgeous scenery. Italy, Portugal, Turkey......... all interesting places to visit.

You know where we daydream of living? A cul-de-sac of bungalow homes near Sam's Town casino. We see it on the free bus from Fremont Street. Every time we pass it, I think 'jeez, I wish we could live right here in Las Vegas.'.........

A nearby Wal-Mart for the food shopping......... movies and a cheap buffet at Sam's Town......... bliss....

Are you serious? Face it, every human has different levels of mental capacity, some extremely high and some below average. Why should we not include them in all aspects of conversation. We use the word "genius" both literally and sarcastically so why not use the word "retarded" both ways too? No one is being singled out, but to say we should never use the words retarded or mentally challenged is close minded and controlling. Want to ban books too? Face it, some people are born retarded and if you exhibit traits like you are then you'll be compared to them. If you come up with a brainstorm it's certainly alright to compare you with a genius. Duh.

And second, true political correctness in America is allowing anyone to say what they want, you tolerating it, not infringing upon them, and the right to rebuke them with your own argument. Political correctness shouldn't be about censorship. If it were it would infringe my 1st amendment right.

Last edited by nickydim; 07-30-2015 at 06:53 AM.. Reason: spelling. I was retarded and misspelled mentally challenged

I've never lived anywhere that has a public transportation system but certain jobs won't hire you unless you have a car. Even though a bus stop is 10 feet away. If you're bilingual, that will help boost up your chances. They cater to the Mexican community here.
The car is probably due to the employer wanting you to show up faster then a bus can provide.

Once you're about 5 miles outside of the fun there is nothing but suburbs, desert, mountains, and fast food joints.

How about climbing a mountain? Exploring some of the small out of the way areas of your town or community center, get involved in a charity and or even STARTING your own "Social group"??

Just as many people move in as they move out.
No place is "Perfect" we make it so or leave and then complain others didn't make us feel "Welcome"
